Synopsis
Matthew travaille comme ingénieur dans une compagnie pétrolière américaine. Il passe le week-end à Marrakech et y fait la connaissance de Nina, employée dans une agence de voyages. Il tombe rapidement amoureux d'elle, mais celle-ci préfère garder ses distances.Actors

It is 1957, 12 years after World War II. Maximilian Theo Aldorfer (Dirk Bogarde), a former Nazi SS officer who had pretended to be a doctor in order to be able to take sensational photographs in the concentration camps, and Lucia Atherton (Charlotte Rampling), a concentration camp survivor who had an ambiguous sadomasochistic relationship with Aldorfer. Le personnage principal, Léo, est un jeune tibétologue italien qui vient de terminer la traduction de la vie de Milarépa (Cavani avait lu le texte en traduction anglaise, qui n'avait toujours pas été faite en italien) et est impliqué dans un accident de voiture avec son professeur et son épouse. Dans la voiture détruite sur la route dans la campagne, Léo commence à raconter ce qu'il a fini de traduire. Le film se déplace ensuite vers le Tibet délibérément irréaliste et hors du temps, dans lequel la vie de Milarépa est jouée par les mêmes acteurs jouant Léo, le professeur et sa femme. Ce n'est qu'à la fin du film, la scène de retour à la voiture qui s'est écrasée que les acteurs reprennent leur rôle « occidental ».

Berlin 1938: Louise von Hollendorf is married to Heinz, a German senior diplomat at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. She decides to take drawing lessons at the institute of Fine Arts. At the institute, Louise meets Mitsuko Matsugae, a young and alluring daughter of the Japanese Ambassador. Captivated by Mitsuko's beauty, Louise asks her to model for her sketching practice. Rumor spreads at the institute that the two women are romantically engaged. Rather than driving them apart the rumors bring the two friends closer together and soon they have a passionate affair. As Louise later confides to her former literature professor, "One moment we were laughing, the next, we were making love". They have their romantic encounters first at Louise's house and later at a seedy hotel. After spending more and more time together Louise falls in love with Mitsuko.
