Birth of a Community: Jews and the Gold Rush is a 1994 documentary directed by Bill Chayes. The film traces the history of Jews and the experiences that tempted this group and others to the American West Coast by the prospect of being financially established by mining gold.

Synopsis

Groups of various national and ethnic origins arrived seeking their fortune; this documentary focuses on the Jewish presence in California during the Gold Rush. This feature traces the arrival of Jews in the ‘rough and tumble’ West and follows how they settled and grew with the towns and establishing communities, which have grown to become more valuable than gold in a sense.

Norman Finkelstein est né à Brooklyn en 1953, de parents survivants des camps de concentration nazis. En 1988, il obtient son doctorat du Department of Politics at Princeton University, sur la théorie du sionisme. Disciple de Noam Chomsky et brillant universitaire, Norman Finkelstein est l’auteur de plusieurs ouvrages traduits dans le monde entier dont L’industrie de l’Holocauste (Réflexion sur l’exploitation de la souffrance des Juifs) (La Fabrique Editions - 2000) et Mythes et réalité du conflit israélo-palestinien (Aden Editions - 2006). Mais, la liberté de ton de Finkelstein dérange, elle lui a valu en 2007 d’être licencié de l’Université DePaul (Chicago) et d’être taxé de « Juif antisémite » par des membres de lobbies pro-israéliens américains.

The film traces the confluence of factors that made the 1979 Peace Treaty between Israel and Egypt possible. It reveals that while some, such as Carter, Begin and Sadat, were driven by deeply held ideas of faith and conviction, others were military hawks who in their later years came to see peace as the only viable option; still others saw peace and stability in business terms. The film focuses on two young rap artists, Subliminal, an Israeli Jew, and Tamer Nafar, a Palestinian citizen of Israel, and focuses on their music, friendship, and their politicization as public figures. The film traces the relationship between Tamer and Subliminal, as the events of the Second Intifada unfold, and lets the viewer draw conclusions from the souring relations between the two as an individual representation of the polarization process which took place during these years of bloody conflict. In this aspect, the film succeeds in delivering the atmosphere of the loss of hopes for peace after the failure of the Camp David summit between Ehud Barak and Yasser Arafat and the renewed intensity of the conflict since. The film was featured in the San Francisco Jewish Film Festival.
