Bjurra is an abandoned fishing village in Lofoten. One summer the place is visited by thirteen children from a boarding school, along with the caretaker Pedersen (Kolstad) and his wife (Andersen). When Mrs. Pedersen one day breaks her leg and needs to be hospitalized, the children themselves take over the care of the island. They make a newspaper, put up a play and establish a sports clubs. The children even write a constitution and select a municipal council and a president. In a short time Bjurra develops into a viable community, with caretaker Pedersen as honorary citizen.

In 1890 Kristiania (Oslo), an impoverished and lonely writer named Pontus (Per Oscarsson) comes to the city from the country. He stands on a bridge, overlooking running water, writing but clearly starving. He visits a pawnbroker several times. He sells his waistcoat for a few cents, then gives the money to a beggar. Other money that falls into his hands he also gives away. He has written an article that a newspaper editor (Henki Kolstad) agrees to publish if he makes some corrections, but Pontus is too proud to accept an advance when offered, so he leaves elated but still hungry. He begs a bone for his dog, which he gnaws on secretly in an alley. He often has the chance to make things better for himself, but his pride gets in the way, such as when he declines the much-needed help of a worried friend.

The film takes place 20–23 August 1958. An American bomber is shot down on the Norwegian coast during World War II. The airmen bail out and land at different locations. In spite of the German search for them, the Norwegian resistance picks them up and hides them in the attic of the local church, a center of operations. Things become tense, however, when the hideout is spotted by a notorious collaborator, and soon the protagonist, Hans (Henki Kolstad), has to get the airmen to Sweden.
