The film was written and directed by Larry Cohen. Black Caesar is a remake of the 1931 film Little Caesar. It features a notable musical score (Black Caesar) by James Brown (with heavy input from his bandleader Fred Wesley), his first experience with writing music for film. A sequel titled Hell Up in Harlem was released in late 1973.
Synopsis
Tommy Gibbs (Fred Williamson) is an African-American who grew up in Harlem, New York City. As a kid, he was brutally assaulted by racist white cop McKinney. The incident led him to a life of crime. As an adult, he joins New York mafia and becomes the head of a black crime syndicate in Harlem. He wages a gang war with the Italian mobsters of New York City and begins to establish a criminal empire, keeping a ledger book of all his dealings as leverage over his business associates, including McKinney.Actors

Laissé pour mort à la fin de Black Caesar, le parrain de Harlem, Tommy Gibbs a survécu grâce à l'intervention de son père qui a réussi à l'emmener à l'hôpital à temps tout en cachant des précieux documents dévoilant la corruption du procureur de New York Di Angelo et de plusieurs policiers. Mis en danger, Di Angelo a donc ordonné la mort de Gibbs. Ce dernier, toujours aidé par son père, font le ménage chez leurs ennemis en nettoyant les rues de Harlem et font un arrangement pacifique avec Di Angelo pour être blanchis des accusations portées contre eux par la police. Désormais, Gibbs pense à renoncer à l'illégalité lorsqu'il tombe amoureux de sœur Jennifer, une religieuse qui travaille avec le révérend Rufus, un ancien maquereau qui a trouvé la rédemption dans la religion.

The movie opens to a narration detailing the poor economic state of a gang-ridden Gary. The narrator explains to the audience of how the city came into such a state. After the opening narrative, the scene switches to the base of operations for the Rebels, a local street gang, and a one-on-one basketball game between a Rebel gang member and a local boy named Kenny Thompson. Kenny humiliates the Rebel by winning and taking the gambled winnings for his own. After he leaves, Spyro, the current co-leader of the Rebels (opposite Damien) is under the impression that Kenny's skills are something more than "something he picked up." He instructs his lieutenant, Kayo, to exact retribution on Kenny for being hustled.
