Marcos, a rich engineer, discovers on his wedding night that his bride was not a virgin and murders her in the bridal chamber. Despite the sensation caused in the media by the resultant case, Marcos is acquitted and moves to Guaraíba in an attempt to put the affair behind him. He finds a job managing the construction of a factory and becomes a co-worker of Décio, who lives with his paralyzed mother and Sônia, his adoptive sister. Sônia, who is engaged to Décio, is attracted to Marcos and although he is initially unaware of her feelings, he eventually acknowledges that he has fallen in love with her. After discovering that Marcos has seduced Sônia, Décio swears to kill him, but a fight culminates in Décio's death instead. At the end of the film, Marcos and Sônia get married.

Dédié à Volta Grande (Minas Gerais), la ville natale du réalisateur, le film débute dans une école rurale où une maîtresse raconte à ses élèves ce récit : la fille du "colonel" Januário, propriétaire d'une vaste fazenda, vit une idylle avec un jeune homme. Pendant que le "colonel" prépare son élection à la mairie, les deux amants disparaissent. L'accordéoniste de la région, également amoureux de la jeune femme, finit par les retrouver. Januário marie les deux fiancés. Durant la cérémonie, l'accordéoniste, soupirant infortuné, s'éclipse. Selon la légende, on peut l'entendre, de temps en temps, jouer une mélodie nostalgique à travers les champs de canne à sucre.

Un homme et deux femmes dérivent en mer sur un canot. Épuisés, ils ont cessé de ramer laissant le destin faire son œuvre. L'une des femmes raconte qu'elle s'est échappée de prison mais qu'elle n'a pas, par la suite, retrouvé l'équilibre souhaité. La presse annonce maintenant son évasion, la forçant ainsi à reprendre sa fuite. Au cours de son récit, l'homme a pu ranimer l'autre femme, jusque-là évanouie au fond de l'embarcation. L'existence de celle-ci n'a pas été non plus très exaltante : mariée à un pianiste alcoolique, la jeune femme a fini par quitter son foyer. De son côté, l'homme, veuf, confie qu'il s'est épris d'une femme mariée. Or, lorsqu'il se rend sur le tombeau de sa défunte épouse, le mari de sa maîtresse lui apprend que sa femme est lépreuse. Sur le bateau, l'eau manque. L'homme se jette à la mer pour récupérer un baril flottant à la surface. Puis, il ne réapparaît plus. À bord, une des femmes, fortement irritée, agresse l'autre.

Jimmy "Fingers" Angelelli (Harvey Keitel) is a brilliant young pianist who also works as a collector for his father Ben (Michael V. Gazzo), a powerful loan shark. Wherever Jimmy goes, he always carries a stereo with him, playing classic rock from the '50's and '60's. While trying to concentrate on an up-coming recital interview at Carnegie Hall, Jimmy loses focus when he falls for a woman named Carol (Tisa Farrow).
