Alonzo pioneered hand held work, lighting techniques and HD development during his career. He will probably be remembered mainly for Chinatown (1974) and Scarface (1983).
Alonzo was first American cinematographer of Mexican-American and Latino heritage to become a member of the Cinematographer’s Union in Los Angeles, as well as the first to be inducted into the A.S.C..

The plot revolves around a naive 17-year-old girl, Susan Slade (Connie Stevens), who becomes pregnant during a shipboard romance with Conn White, a mountain climber (Grant Williams). Her parents decide that it is best for Susan to allow them to pass the baby off as theirs to protect her reputation. Feeling helpless, Susan reluctantly agrees to pretend to be the baby's older sister. Later, two suitors, Hoyt Brecker (Troy Donahue) and Wells Corbett (Bert Convy) court Susan, not knowing that she is a mother. A Mexican village is periodically raided for food and supplies by Calvera (Eli Wallach) and his bandits. As he and his men ride away from their latest visit, Calvera promises to return to loot the village again. Taking what meager goods they have, the village leaders ride to a town just inside the American border hoping to barter for weapons to defend themselves. While there, they encounter Chris Adams (Yul Brynner), a veteran Cajun gunslinger. After listening to their tale, Chris suggests that the village hire gunfighters, which would be cheaper than guns and ammunition. The village men relentlessly try to convince him to be their gunman. At first he agrees only to help them find men, but later he decides to recruit six other men to help him defend the village, despite the poor pay offered.

The time is the early-to-mid-1960s, the height of the Cold War between the United States and the Soviet Union. An unknown aircraft approaches North America from Europe. American bombers of the Strategic Air Command (SAC) are scrambled to their fail safe points near Russia. The bombers have orders not to proceed past their fail safe points without receiving a special attack code. The original "threat" is proven to be innocuous and recall orders are issued. However, due to a technical failure, the attack code is transmitted to Group Six, which consists of six Vindicator supersonic bombers and four escort fighters. Colonel Grady, the head of the group, tries to contact Omaha to verify the fail-safe order (called Positive Check), but due to Soviet radar jamming, Grady cannot hear Omaha. Concluding that the attack order and the radar jamming could only mean nuclear war, Grady commands Group Six towards Moscow, their intended destination.
