Jason Kincaid (Oliver Reed) has a massive serpent captured in a remote island. He brought it to the US because it killed his brother, and he now shares some kind of psychic link with it. Seth Brundle (Jeff Goldblum), a brilliant but eccentric scientist, meets Veronica Quaife (Geena Davis), a journalist for Particle magazine, at a meet-the-press event held by Bartok Science Industries, the company that provides funding for Brundle's work. Seth takes Veronica back to the warehouse that serves him as both home and laboratory, and shows her a project that will change the world: a set of "Telepods" that allows instantaneous teleportation of an object from one pod to another. Brundle convinces Veronica to keep the project's existence quiet in exchange for exclusive rights to the story, and she begins to document his work. Although the Telepods can transport inanimate objects, they do not work properly on living things, as is demonstrated when a live baboon is turned inside-out during an experiment.

The film opens with an alien ship that crashes into a U.S national park. The alien's dead arm comes out of the craft and a small mosquito starts feeding off the blood. While driving, two lovers Megan and Ray (Rachelle Loiselle and Tim Lovelace) accidentally hit the mutated giant mosquito. They get out of the vehicle to analyses it, unsure of its nature. They then go to a summer camp and rent a Bungalow. Meanwhile Hendricks (Ron Asheton) is sent off to spread mosquito killing gas everywhere and even on the campers. Three bank robbers, Earl, Junior and Rex are stopped in the forest and this is when Rex first meets his encounter with the giant mosquitoes. He runs for his life but is accidentally shot down by Junior. Megan, Ray, Earl, Junior, Hendricks and Parks a searcher for a radioactive meteorite are brought back together in a RV. They fight against the insects until the vehicle tips over and crashes. Everyone manages to get out, except for Junior who is attacked and brutally killed by the mosquitoes. The rest of the group are trapped inside a sewer and fight off the mosquitoes with fire. The morning comes and the group comes out exhausted and wounded. They walk through the forest, find and hide in an abandoned farm house. But the mosquitoes quickly find the crew and try to get them. Meanwhile, searching around the house, Parks and Hendricks find a room filled with mosquito larva. So they plan to blow up the house to kill all the mosquitoes. They install a bomb, while still fighting against the mutants. Hendricks tries to escape the house by an elevator but the contraption breaks and Hendricks falls to his death. Earl is also later killed, one second before the house explodes and only Parks, Ray and Megan manages to survive.

After a series of Amazonian Indian attacks on US owned petroleum installation in Brazil, both governments start a secret 'special program'. An earthquake releases a bunch of mutant cockroaches that can create fire by rubbing their cerci together. Eventually most of the bugs die because they cannot survive in the low air pressure on the Earth's surface, but a scientist Prof. James Parmiter (Dillman) keeps one alive in a pressure chamber. The film opens with newspaper photojournalist Audrey Aimes (Castle) accidentally stumbling upon a small town in Illinois which has been inexplicably destroyed. All 150 people in the town are missing, and the evidence indicates they are dead. Incredibly, the local fields are also barren, as if a swarm of locusts had eaten all the crops. Aimes suspects that the military is covering something up, and travels to a nearby United States Department of Agriculture experimental farm to learn what creature might have caused the agricultural destruction. She meets Dr. Ed Wainwright (Graves), who is experimenting with radiation as a means of growing gigantic fruits and vegetables to end world hunger. Dr. Wainwright reports that there have been a number of mysterious incidents nearby, and that locusts have eaten all the radioactive wheat stored in a nearby grain silo.

In preparation for sending a manned rocket into space, American scientists Dr. Quent Brady and Dan Morgan are put in charge of a program that sends various animals and insects into space to test their survival rates. After one of their rockets carrying wasps malfunctions and goes off course, a computer calculates that the rocket is likely to land somewhere off the coast of Africa. Some time later, in a remote part of Africa, Dr. Lorentz and his daughter Lorna perform an autopsy on a native and determine that he died of paralysis of the nerve centers caused by an injection of a massive amount of venom. Arobi, Lorentz' African assistant, then informs him that a monster is believed to be terrorizing people and animals in an area known as Green Hell.
