Synopsis
Bob, a middle-aged gambler and ex-con living in the Montmartre district of Paris, experiences a run of bad luck that leaves him nearly broke. Bob is a gentleman with scruples, well liked in the demi-monde community. He has unsuccessfully tried to rob a bank in the past, and has spent time in prison.Actors

Après cinq ans d'emprisonnement dans un établissement pénitentiaire de Marseille, Corey (Alain Delon) est sur le point d'être libéré. La veille de sa sortie, le gardien-chef de la prison lui propose une affaire. Sitôt libre, Corey rend visite à son ancien comparse, un nommé Rico, caïd enrichi, devenu amant de sa petite amie. Corey contraint le malfrat à lui remettre une somme d'argent liquide importante. Amer, ce dernier dépêche deux sbires aux trousses de Corey. Dans une salle de billard, Corey saisit une queue et, à l'aide d'une craie rouge, trace avec son procédé (l'embout de la queue qui sert à frapper les boules) un cercle qu'il remplit ensuite, avant de disperser les boules. Les hommes de Rico le rejoignent et l'entretien se termine dans le sang. Mais Corey en repart indemne. Il achète une voiture d'occasion remarquée dans la vitrine d'un revendeur automobile et entreprend de regagner son domicile du 16e arrondissement de Paris.

Four men rob a bank in Saint-Jean-de-Monts. A detective (Delon) tries to catch the team responsible for the lethal bank robbery, foil a drug smuggling operation and hold on to his girlfriend (Deneuve), whom he shares with a nightclub owner (Crenna), his friend and a prime suspect in the robbery. The notoriety and shared knowledge between the players intensifies into the film, similar to a Le Carre adaptation with the protagonists confronting each other at the climax of the story. The short stories and anecdotes that lead viewers to the conclusion, become a melange of real time actions scenes and non verbal interactions that hint at spy mystery, while remaining open to the viewer's interpretation. In one scene, all three protagonists can be seen at a bar, sharing a drink and glancing at each other as strangers, each one coy to reveal his or her real identity. Hence Melville's license to play with characters and plots to leave space for the film genre to shine through.

Un casse se déroule mal, l'un des trois malfaiteurs est blessé, Une fois en sécurité Marc veut appeler un médecin pour secourir le blessé, mais son complice s'y oppose, une bagarre éclate entre les deux hommes au cours de laquelle Marc tue son acolyte tandis que le blessé expire. Marc se retrouve seul avec des diamants à écouler. Comme tout se sait dans le milieu, il n'arrive pas à les fourguer à un bon prix. Il est suivi et surveillé et ne peut se fier à personne. Chez l'un des receleurs qu'il contacte, il perd les diamants sans argent en échange. Il rencontre par hasard Marie. Ensemble ils font des projets d'avenir, mais il n'a plus rien. Il tente de contacter le directeur de l'établissement chez qui le hold-up a eu lieu. La police lui tend alors un piège dans le métro. Il en réchappe mais est rattrapé par les tueurs du milieu.

Les parents de Thérèse et Denise Voise viennent de mourir, et Thérèse annule son entrée imminente au couvent pour s’occuper de sa sœur cadette. Max, jeune garagiste et séducteur impénitent, abuse de Denise qui tente ensuite de mettre fin à ses jours. En réparation, Thérèse demande alors à Max d’épouser Denise. In a town in the French Alps during the Occupation, Barny (Riva) is a young, wayward, sexually frustrated widow, living with her little girl. She is also a communist militant who long ago decided that the easiest way was the best. One day she enters a church, randomly chooses a priest (Belmondo) to confess to and, while in confessional, attempts to provoke him by criticizing Catholicism. Instead of being affronted, the priest engages her in an intellectual discussion regarding religion. The priest is Leon Morin, young, handsome, smart and altruistic. He invites Barny to continue the conversation outside of confessional. She begins regularly seeing him and is impressed by his moral strength, while he makes it his mission to steer her onto the right path.

At the age of 14, Bart Tare robs a hardware store and steals a gun.
