Synopsis
When a striptease dancer is brutally murdered in Las Vegas, detective Rita Cates and her partner, J.D. Prejon, are assigned to the case. There is not much evidence available, but what they have points to Sam McKeon, an ex-cop. This puts Rita in a difficult position, because she and Sam previously had a scalding affair, which ultimately led to her husband's suicide. They have not spoken since then, but Rita could never get Sam out of her mind. During the investigation, they resume their affair, although Rita is constantly torn between trust and distrust, and attempting to keep an open mind. Eventually she has to choose, knowing that the wrong choice may get her killed.Actors

Paul Hackett, a word processor, meets Marcy Franklin in a local cafe in New York. They discuss their common interest in Henry Miller. Marcy leaves Paul her number and informs him that she lives with a sculptor named Kiki Bridges, who makes and sells plaster of Paris paperweights resembling cream cheese bagels. Later in the night, under the pretense of buying a paperweight, Paul visits Marcy, taking a cab to her apartment. On his way to visit Marcy, a $20 bill is blown out the window of the cab, leaving him with only some spare pocket change. The cab driver is furious that he cannot pay, thereby beginning the first in a long series of misadventures for Paul that turn hostile through no fault of his own. At the apartment Paul meets the sculptor Kiki and Marcy, and comes across a collection of photographs and medications which imply that Marcy is severely disfigured from burns on her legs and torso. As a result of this implication, and as a result of a strained conversation with Marcy, Paul abruptly slips out of the apartment.

The film opens in New York City, where Bridget works as a telemarketing manager and her husband Clay is training to be a doctor. He is heavily in debt to a loan shark so he arranges to sell stolen pharmaceutical cocaine to two drug dealers. The transaction becomes tense when the buyers pull a gun, but rather to Clay's surprise, they eventually pay him $700,000. Clay is left shaken, and on his return home he slaps Bridget after she insults him. She then steals the cash from him and flees their apartment while he is in the shower.
