Its original Serbian language title is Буре барута (Bure baruta) which means Powder Keg. It was released in English speaking countries under the title of Cabaret Balkan, with the official reason for the name change being that Kevin Costner had already registered a film project under the title Powder Keg. The film received a number of distinctions, including a FIPRESCI award at the Venice Film Festival in 1998. It was based on a play by the same title by Dejan Dukovski.

An archaeological team, digging in a remote village and led by an old professor, unearths an old Roman artifact, a gravestone bearing some mysterious inscriptions. After realizing that they have stumbled upon something precious, the professor collapses with a heart attack. Seemingly dead for people around him, he finds himself in a sort of afterlife state and realizes that the stone marked a passage into the classical underworld so he starts mingling with the antique spirits of the dead. The spirits themselves appear just as silly and petty as the peasants from the village above them, and in their desire to see what happened to their descendants, they find themselves surprised by the modern world of the living.

Dans l'espoir d'une vie meilleure, deux jeunes couples quittent leurs pays respectifs. Melinda et Nik quittent l'Albanie en bateau pour l'Italie, afin de vivre leur amour interdit. Vera et Marko, quant à eux, quittent la Serbie, en train, pour l'Autriche, via la Hongrie. Marko, violoncelliste talentueux, a la chance d'entrer dans le fameux orchestre philarmonique de Vienne. Mais, à leur arrivée à la frontière, bien qu'ils aient des visas en règle, pour eux, les problèmes commencent... En dépit du fait qu'ils n'ont rien à voir avec un grave incident qui s'est déroulé la veille au Kosovo, et à cause de coïncidences malheureuses, ils sont arrêtés. Leur espoir de réaliser leurs rêves dans cette Europe, synonyme de Terre Promise, s'évanouit. Comme c'est souvent le cas avec les jeunes des Balkans, ils payent les erreurs des générations précédentes.

A large flood has almost destroyed a village. A hypnotist (Ristovski) comes to the village and speaks to the destitute inhabitants.
