Synopsis
A wild young woman, born and raised in Texas, rebels against the man she believes to be her father. Moving to Chicago, she marries badly, loses her child in a boardinghouse fire, is nearly forced to become a prostitute, and is renounced by her father, who tells her he never wishes to see her again.Actors

Millie (Helen Twelvetrees) is a naive young woman who marries a wealthy man from New York, Jack Maitland (James Hall). Three years later, unhappy in her marriage due to her husband's continued infidelity, she asks for and receives a divorce. Because of her pride, she does not want his money, however, she also does not want to remove her daughter from a comfortable lifestyle. She allows Jack and his mother (Charlotte Walker), to retain custody of Millie's daughter, Connie (Anita Louise). Focusing on her career, she rises through the hierarchy of the hotel where she is employed, shunning the attention of the rich banker, Jimmy Damier (John Halliday), preferring the attentions of the reporter, Tommy Rock (Robert Ames), although, due to her prior sour relationship, refuses to marry. Eventually, Millie is promoted to the head of operations for the hotel. At the same time, Tommy is offered a lucrative position at the bank by Damier, as a favor to Millie. However, at the celebration party, Millie discovers that Tommy, just like Maitland, is cheating on her.

The film takes place in the French colony of Cochin-China. Young French magistrate (Antonio Moreno) and his wife (Billie Dove) are victims of virtual imprisonment because president (Noah Beery) of colony in which they are stationed has a sexual interest in the magistrate's wife. Beery refuses to allow Moreno to advance in his career on the bench until his wife agrees to his demands. Moreno, angered by this treatment after four years of hard work, secretly goes to the governor of the colony to complain. Dove endeavors in crucial moment to save her husband from disaster by pleading with the president but inadvertently reveals her husband's plan. Being afraid for the safety of her husband, Dove consents to do whatever Beery wishes as long as he does nothing to endanger her husband. Just as Beery is about to seduce Dove, he is murdered by a native musician who has been hiding in the room. Dove is immediately suspected of the murder and the musician comes out of hiding and accuses Dove of the murder. Moreno is placed in charge of the investigation and discovers that the musician is lying and that he is the one responsible. Tired of the dangers of life in the French colony, Moreno and Dove head back to Paris where Moreno hopes to start a new career.

Captain Charles W. Morgan (William Walcott) is a well-respected businessman who owns a fleet of whaling ships in the Quaker town of New Bedford, Massachusetts. He is very close to his shy, obedient daughter, Patience (Marguerite Courtot), and tells her that she must marry a man who is a whaler and a Quaker, like him. His son and daughter-in-law were lost ten years before while on a whaling expedition; eventually, their baby, his granddaughter Dot (Clara Bow), was found floating near shore on a raft made of branches. It is 1917, and Portugal is feeling the aftereffects of a storm of antireligious sentiment and the violent overthrow of the government in the 5 October 1910 revolution. Churches in Lisbon are boarded up. Many priests, nuns, monks and friars are shown being fingerprinted, photographed and registered as possible criminals before being jailed. Miriam Blaylock (Catherine Deneuve) is a beautiful and dangerous immortal vampire, promising specially chosen humans eternal life as her vampire lovers. As the film begins, her vampire companion is John (David Bowie), a talented cellist whom she married in 18th century France. The film opens in a night club in New York, to a live performance from Bauhaus. There they connect with another young couple who are brought home and fed upon by slashing their throats with a bladed Ankh pendant. The bodies are disposed of by an incinerator in the basement of John and Miriam's elegant New York townhouse, where they pose as a wealthy couple who teach classical music.
