The Woman Disputed is a 1928 American drama film. Norma Talmadge stars as a good-hearted Viennese prostitute drawn into a romantic triangle on the eve of World War I. Based on a Denison Clift play, the nationalities of the characters had to be adjusted to satisfy official complaints registered with the MPPDA from the German government.

Released with a soundtrack of effects and synchronized music, this film is the end of Talmadge's career in silent films. She was separated from her husband and producer Schenck, would take the next year for vocal lessons, appear in two talking films, then retire. A print exists in the Library of Congress film archive, and has been recently revived.

Synopsis

Paul Hartman, un officier autrichien, et son ami Nika Turgenov, un fier lieutenant russe, en permission à Lemberg, cherchent ensemble à aider Mary Ann Wagner, une prostituée avec un cœur noble. La guerre est déclarée entre la Russie et l'Autriche, et les deux hommes reçoivent l'ordre de rejoindre leur régiment respectif. Mary promet à Paul de l'épouser, et Nika jure qu'il se vengera. Plus tard, une unité de l'armée russe commandée par Nika occupe Lemberg, et Mary doit se soumettre aux étreintes de Nika afin d'obtenir la libération d'un espion. Le lendemain, l'armée autrichienne, grâce aux informations fournies par l'espion, reprend la ville. Paul apprend le sacrifice de Mary et refuse d'abord de lui pardonner. Engineer and inventor Robert Fulton (Richard Greene) comes to New York in 1807, where he meets tavern keeper Pat O'Day (Alice Faye). O'Day comes to strongly support Fulton and his visionary steamship after lodging at her establishment. O'Day's longtime suitor, Charles Browne (Fred MacMurray), opens his own shipyard to assist the dapper engineer by building Fulton's innovative steamboat. With financial assistance from Chancellor Robert L. Livingstone (Henry Stephenson) and additional investments from O'Day and her business acquaintances, Fulton eventually obtains all the financing needed to finish his revolutionary paddle steamer. After a shipwright named Regan (Ward Bond) has a run-in with Fulton, Regan attempts to turn every local deck hand and sail-powered passenger boat operator against the engineer, exploiting their fear of losing their livelihoods to a steam-powered vessel. In the end, against much adversity and additional interference from Regan, Fulton finally completes his steamboat and launches her to great success, silencing the critics and doubters who had previously labeled his venture "Fulton's Folly".
