Add to a movie listCalling Philo Vance is a 1940 American mystery/comedy released by Warner Bros. and starring James Stephenson as the dilettante detective Philo Vance, his only appearance as the character; Margot Stevenson co-stars. The film also features Henry O'Neill, Edward Brophy, Sheila Bromley and Ralph Forbes. It was directed by William Clemens from a screeenplay by Tom Reed, based on the 1933 novel The Kennel Murder Case by S. S. Van Dine, which had previously been made into a film in 1933, starring William Powell and Mary Astor.
For this adaptation of the story, Vance is on international assignment from the United States government to investigate traffic in wartime aircraft designs. The original story dealt with art world double-dealing, but the solution to the mystery is the same in each film.
Synopsis
Philo est à Vienne travaillant pour le gouvernement des États-Unis pour voir si Archer Coe vend des dessins d'avions à des puissances étrangères. Il saisit les plans avec la signature Archer, mais est capturé par la police avant qu'il ne puisse échapper. Déporté, il revient à l'Amérique et des plans pour faire face à Archer, mais Archer est retrouvé mort dans sa chambre fermée à clé avec un fusil à la main. Bien qu'il ressemble à un suicide, Vance sait mieux et le coroner estime que Archer a été tué, frappé avec un objet contondant et poignardée - qui fait du suicide improbable. Mais Vance est sur l'affaire et cherche à voir si les secrets du gouvernement ont été vendus et qui a assassiné Coe. Ceci est un remake de « The Assassiner Kennel Case » à l'aide des dessins d'avions et d'espionnage au lieu de la porcelaine chinoise et des spectacles de chiens.Actors

Steve Van Ruyle (Robert Preston) is a sailor who inherits a position on the board of a company headed by Bjorn Faulkner (Nils Asther). The board is concerned to discover $20 million has disappeared from the company's funds, and demands answers from Faulkner. That night Faulkner meets with a man called Anton Haraba, and is apparently thrown from his penthouse balcony to his death. Moments later, Faulkner's secretary, Kit Lane (Ellen Drew), enters the penthouse, leading police to arrest her for Faulkner's murder. Van Ruyle takes it upon himself to investigate the crime. Suspecting that Lane and Faulkner were embezzling the money together, he pays her bail so he can question her about the situation. They find Faulkner's diary, and the entries lead Van Ruyle to believe Lane is innocent. The district attorney (Paul Stanton) doesn't agree, and Lane goes to trial.
