Coastal Command is a 1943 British film made by the Crown Film Unit for the Ministry of Information. The film, distributed by RKO, dramatised the work of RAF Coastal Command.

Coastal Command is a documentary-style account of the Short Sunderland and Consolidated PBY Catalina flying boats during the Battle of the Atlantic. The film includes real footage of attacks on a major enemy ship by Hudson and Halifax bombers based in Iceland.

Synopsis

In 1942, a Sunderland flying boat with Pilot Roger Hunter and Flight Sergeant Charles Norman Lewis as crew, set out on a patrol, flying out of their Scotland air base.

In 1943, the RCAF strength and equipment consists of 32 overseas squadrons based in England. Two fundamental missions were essential to the Allied air strategy: night bombing and interdiction. While bombers struck at the heart of occupied Europe, the German war machine reacted by sending out supplies to their far-flung European bases by rail. The RCAF disrupted the "nerve centres" by attacking the rail system. These specialized ground attack fighters were extremely successful, with fighter-bombers destroying munition trains.

The film begins with a male narrator (Ray Milland) explaining where Midway Island is and its strategic importance. About five minutes into the film the format changes somewhat, with more leisurely pictures of the G.I.s at work on the island, and then a female voice over. The female voice over (Verna Felton) takes the personality of a middle aged woman from Springfield, Ohio, who is a mother-type figure pointing out how she recognizes a boy from her home town. The boy is Army Air Force pilot William E. "Junior" Kinney. Then stock footage of the Kinney family back home is introduced.

Un matin de l'hiver 1940, Barrett, une jeune recrue, arrive à la caserne de l'Auxiliary Fire Service , la brigade d'incendie de Londres et est intégré dans une équipe de sept pompiers. Pendant toute la journée, les huit hommes se préparent pour les opérations prévues à la nuit tombée. Londres est bombardée par l'aviation allemande et nombre de bâtiments sont en feu. Le service d'incendie se bat de toutes ses forces contre les flammes. Un navire de munitions, amarré sur la Tamise, prend feu. L'équipe intervient sur cette mission dangereuse, mais un des pompiers, Jackson, est tué et les autres grièvement blessés. Le lendemain, le camarade est enterré, alors que le navire de munitions quitte le port.
