Akuto (悪党, Akutō, literally "bad man") is a 1965 Japanese film directed by Kaneto Shindo starring Kyoko Kishida. It is based on a story by Jun'ichirō Tanizaki.

Synopsis

A bad man ("Akuto") wants to sleep with a woman (Kyoko Kishida). He spies on her with the help of Jiju (Nobuko Otowa). Then the woman's husband Rokuro decides to leave the court. He initially tells his wife to stay behind. The bad guy intends to sleep with the woman but she goes with her husband. Jiju leaves with them. The bad man orders his soldiers to follow them, and kill everyone except the woman. The bad man's soldiers catch up with them. One by one each of them combats the soldiers and dies, until finally only Rokuro is left. He fights bravely but is overwhelmed and finally dies.

Toku, a factory worker (Taiji Tonoyama) gives food to a starving woman, Tsuru (Nobuko Otowa), who then follows him home. He shares a shack in a shanty village in Kawasaki with his friend Pin-chan (Jūkichi Uno). The two men try to get rid of her but then let her stay when she gives them money. Tsuru tells the people of the village that she lost her job due to a strike, then was robbed of her severance pay, then sold to a brothel in Tsuchiura. She ran away with a friend from Kawasaki. Toku and Pin-chan sell her to a geisha house and spend the money. She is thrown out. The owner demands his money back. Tsuru earns the money to pay their debt by working as a prostitute outside the station. The other prostitutes beat her. She fends them off with a policeman's revolver and is then shot dead by the police.

Takako Ishikawa (Nobuko Otowa) is a teacher on an island in the inland sea off the coast of Hiroshima after World War II. During her summer holiday, she goes back to Hiroshima to visit the graves of her parents and younger sister, who were killed in the bomb attack. She sees a beggar and realizes he is a man called Iwakichi (Osamu Takizawa) who used to work for her parents, now burned on the face and partially blind. She visits him at his home and asks about his family. His grandson, Tarō, is now in an institution. She visits the institution and finds the children barely have enough to eat. Takako offers to take Iwakichi and his grandson back to the island, but he refuses, running away.

Tamiko (Nobuko Otowa) is a single mother. Her son Toshio (Koji Takahashi) is going blind. He is diagnosed with a brain tumour. She does not have the money for surgery. She asks her mother Yoshie (Haruko Sugimura) for money. Yoshie refuses but arranges a marriage with another single parent, Tajima (Taiji Tonoyama) on condition he pays for the surgery. Tamiko marries Tajima and works with him in his printing business. Toshio is operated on and recovers. However, the tumour returns. The surgeon (Kei Sato) refuses to operate, saying that another operation would be fatal, and tells Tamiko to make Toshio's remaining life enjoyable. Toshio starts learning braille. Tamiko's brother Haruo lends her money to buy an electric organ for Toshio. Haruo, a barman, is involved in various fights over women, and finally dies in an attempt to kill a rival. Toshio dies of the tumour. Tamiko discovers she is pregnant and is determined to have the baby, even if it is dangerous to her health.

An ageing fishing boat, Dai-go Fukuryū Maru ("Lucky Dragon No. 5") sets out from the port of Yaizu in Shizuoka Prefecture. It travels around the Pacific, line fishing. While the ship is near Bikini Atoll, the ship's navigator sees a flash. All the crew come up to watch. They realize it is an atomic explosion, but take the time to clear their fishing gear. A short time later, grey ash starts to fall on the ship. By the time the ship returns to port, the sailors have been burned brown. They unload the fish, which are then transported away. They visit the local doctor and then go to Tokyo for an examination. It turns out they are all highly radioactive. Their symptoms become worse, and the contaminated fish causes a panic. The men are taken to hospitals in Tokyo, leaving their families behind. The radio operator, Kuboyama (Jūkichi Uno), dies from the radiation.

The real Chikuzan appears on a stage in a small theatre, Shibuya Jean-Jean, and begins telling the story of his life. The scene changes to his childhood. Sadazo (Chikuzan's real name) becomes partially blind due to illness at the age of three. Growing up he is bullied. His mother Toyo (Nobuko Otowa) buys him a shamisen and apprentices him to a blind bosama, a begging shamisen player. He finds that although his teacher begs, cajoles and wheedles, pleading poverty, the teacher is actually rich.
