Il est inspiré par un fait réel : à une époque, la seule profession que pouvaient exercer les femmes juives en Russie était la prostitution, et elles devaient posséder un passeport jaune pour fuir la Zone de Résidence, région ouest de l'Empire russe où les Juifs étaient cantonnés par le pouvoir impérial de 1791 à 1917.
L'UFA en fera un remake en 1918 avec Der gelbe Schein, toujours avec Pola Negri.

Pola Negri plays Lea, a bright adolescent girl who lives in the Jewish ghetto of Warsaw with her ill father. She loves to read, and intends to study medicine at a university in St. Petersburg in the hopes of making her father well again. Her father dies suddenly and her tutor, Ossip Storki, is called away to work for the governor. When she goes to Russia, she learns that Jewish women are only allowed to work as sex workers with the benefit of a "yellow passport", otherwise they will be taken to prison. She applies for a yellow passport and takes up residency at a brothel. Upon finding the identification papers of her tutor's deceased sister Sophie in a book her tutor gave her, Lea applies to the University with the deceased sister's identification papers and is accepted. So begins an unhappy life of studying by day and receiving scholastic honors, while reluctantly working as a party girl at night. Her fellow students, including a boy named Dimitri who is in love with her, then find her out. Dimitri in particular is crushed to learn of Lea's double life. Lea realizes that this will be the end of her scholastic career, and attempts suicide.

The film does not tell a story so much as present an essay-like study of Godard's view of contemporary life; Godard wrote that "I wanted to include everything: sports, politics, even groceries. Everything should be put in a film". Godard himself narrates the film in a whispered voice-over that discusses his fears to the audience about the contemporary world, including the Vietnam War. The film often cuts to various still shots of bright consumer products and ongoing construction.

Fleeing abusive families, a group of teenage runaways form a protective family on their own, with King as their leader. 1941. L'Allemagne nazie étend son pouvoir dictatorial à travers l'europe . Pour distraire et réconforter les officiers mobilisés sur le front de l'Europe de l'est, le SS Otto Kramer, proche d'Hitler, décide de mettre en place un réseau de call-girls aryennes. Elles embarqueront dans un train spécial transformé en bordel qui sillonnera l'Europe. Promue capitaine, elle forme aussitôt une équipe spéciale de prostituées, destinées à remonter le moral des soldats du IIIème Reich. Mais la tension est vive à bord du train : Rita, l'une d'entre elles, ne supporte pas la discipline de fer d'Ingrid, femme perfide et autoritaire. Elles n'ont pas d'autre choix que d'assouvir les fantasmes tordus et violents des SS sous peine d'être réprimandées par leur maquerelle. Au fil des années, leur effectif est renforcé d'un groupe de condamnées, coupables d'un complot raté contre Hitler. Parmi elles, Ingrid reconnaît son amie d'enfance Helga dont le père a été exécuté pour trahison. Jusqu'au jour où des partisans polonais envahissent le train pour humilier Ingrid. Elle est sauvée par l'officier allemand Paul Gruhn dont elle tombe amoureuse. Mais ce dernier est séduit par Helga, une autre fille de joie du convoi. Mais Ingrid et ses call-girls, aidés par Gruhn, vont devoir se défendre contre l'attaque des polonais et des Américains qui cherchent à détruire le train.

Lors de la Seconde Guerre mondiale, Nathalie Baksova est une jeune femme russe qui cumule la double fonction de médecin et d'agent secret soviétique. Gravement blessé, le général Hartz est transporté par le lieutenant Erik Müller dans la maison où se trouve Nathalie. Ce dernier la menace de l'envoyer dans un camp de détention si elle ne secourt pas son collègue. Mais, lors d'une seconde embuscade, Hartz est abattu par un résistant et Nathalie sauve la vie de Müller. Alors qu'il est conduit en lieu sûr, elle est arrêtée par les Nazis et déportée en Pologne.
