After a fight with his wife on their anniversary, Scott Henderson (Alan Curtis), a 32-year-old engineer, picks up an equally unhappy woman in a bar and they take a taxi to see a show. The woman refuses to tell him anything about herself. The star of the show, Estela Monteiro (Aurora Miranda), becomes furious when she notices that both she and the mystery woman are wearing the same unusual hat. When Henderson returns home, he finds Police Inspector Burgess (Thomas Gomez) and two of his men waiting to question him; his wife has been strangled with one of his neckties. Henderson has a solid alibi, but the bartender, taxi driver and Monteiro deny seeing the phantom lady. Henderson cannot even clearly describe the woman. He is tried and sentenced to death.

1940 in Paris, Michele de la Becque (Joan Crawford) is a career woman in love with industrial designer Robert Cortot (Philip Dorn). Before the 1939 invasion of Poland by Nazi Germany, the stars of a theater company in Warsaw are the "ham" Josef Tura (Jack Benny) and his beautiful wife, Maria (Carole Lombard). As part of the company's rehearsal of a play satirizing the Nazis, one of the actors, Bronski (Tom Dugan), takes to the street to prove that he looks like Hitler in his costume and makeup. On July 29, 1939, renowned British big game hunter Captain Alan Thorndike (Walter Pidgeon) slips through the forest undetected near the Berghof, Adolf Hitler's residence near Berchtesgaden. Getting the dictator in his telescopic sight, he pulls the trigger on his unloaded rifle and gives a wave. Un banquier est assassiné et la police soupçonne son neveu Raoul, qui est condamné à dix ans de bagne. Or, le véritable assassin est Théo, le frère de Ginette, la compagne de Francis dit Chéri-Bibi, un forçat évadé. Théo est assommé par Chéri-Bibi qui, dénoncé par Ginette, prend la fuite. Repris par la police, il retrouve en prison ses fidèles complices, La Ficelle et Fric-Frac ; Raoul (que Chéri-Bibi ne connait pas) fait aussi partie des prisonniers. Sur le bateau qui les conduit au bagne, les prisonniers menés par Chéri-Bibi tentent en vain de s’évader. Finalement, grâce à la complicité de la femme du patron de l’exploitation forestière où ils sont affectés, Chéri-Bibi et Raoul – qui souhaitent tous deux se venger de Théo – parviennent à s’évader du bagne avec leurs compagnons, mais Chéri-Bibi est grièvement blessé par les gardiens lancés à leur poursuite.
