Daddy & Papa is a 2002 documentary film made by Johnny Symons. It explores same-sex parenting as seen in the lives of four families headed by male couples. The film also examines the legal, social, and political challenges faced by gay parents and their children.


Filmmaker Symons and his partner William Rogers, along with their adopted son, Zachary, were one of the four families featured in the film. Symons says of the project, I wanted to document this phenomenon: what it means for out gay men to form their own families - for the dads, for the kids, for their extended families and schools and communities and the thousands of mainstream people who are being changed by their exposure to a new kind of family.
Daddy & Papa was shown nationwide in the U.S. on PBS in the spring of 2003 as part of its Independent Lens series. The film was scheduled for rebroadcast on the LOGO channel in August 2007.

Le documentaire retrace la vie de Glenn Milstead, dont le personnage de Divine a été sacré « plus belle femme du monde ». Petit garçon timide, jeune homme complexé, il découvre les bars gays puis le travestissement. Un voisin passionné de cinéma, John Waters, le fait tourner dans ses premiers films. Avec ses amis habilleur et maquilleur, Milstead crée le personnage excessif et scandaleux de Divine qu'il interprète dans les films Mondo Trasho, Multiple Maniacs et Pink Flamingos. À la fin des années 1970, il se lance dans la chanson et fait plusieurs tournées aux États-Unis et en Europe. Il revient au cinéma en 1981 avec Polyester, puis dans Lust in the Dust de Paul Bartel et Wanda's Café. Peu après le succès de Hairspray, il meurt d'une crise cardiaque dans son sommeil.

The film begins with a narrator, called The Scientist, making cryptic comments about humanity. He first comments that humanity's constant search for the unknown, results in startling things coming to light. But most of these "new" discoveries are actually quite old, to which he refers to as "the signs of the ages". Later, the scene turns to the streets of a city, with the narrator commenting that each human has his/her own thoughts, ideas, and personality. He makes further comments on human life, while sounds accompany some comments. The cries of a newborn baby are followed by the sirens of an ambulance. One is a sign that a new life has begun, the other that a life has ended.

En 1950, le sous-secrétaire d'État John Peurifoy informe ainsi le public qu'il a renvoyé quatre-vingt onze gays et lesbiennes du Département d'État…
