Set in the early 1900s in the fictional Catfish Row section of Charleston, South Carolina, which serves as home to a black fishing community, the story focuses on the titular characters, crippled beggar Porgy, who travels about in a goat-drawn cart, and the drug-addicted Bess, who lives with stevedore Crown, the local bully. While high on cocaine supplied by Sportin' Life, Crown kills Robbins after the latter vanquishes him in a craps game; Bess urges Crown to flee. Sportin' Life suggests she accompany him to New York City, an offer Bess declines. She seeks refuge with her neighbors, all of whom refuse to help her. Porgy finally agrees to let her stay with him.

En 1820 à Séville en Andalousie, l'histoire devenue célèbre de Don José (Jean Marais), brigadier des dragons, amoureux fou de Carmen (Viviane Romance), une belle et provocante gitane qui l'a séduit au point qu'il déserte pour elle. Dans un excès de jalousie, Don José tue son commandant et s'enfuit avec elle dans les montagnes, devenant lui-même le chef d'une bande de contrebandiers. Carmen parvient à aider certains de ses amis contrebandiers dont Garcia (Lucien Coëdel). Mais Carmen se lasse vite de cet amant qu'elle estime un peu trop transi et s'échappe avec le séduisant toréador Lucas (Julien Bertheau). Don José parvient à la retrouver et, une fois de plus aveuglé par la jalousie, commet l'irréparable en tuant Carmen.

A Paris, dans le Quartier latin, au début du XXe siècle. Trois amis, Rodolphe le poète, Marcel le peintre et Colline le philosophe, vivent ensemble misérablement dans une chambre de bonne. The film opens in the Paris home of courtesan Violetta Valery, where sheets cover the furniture in dimly lit rooms. Creditors, appraisers, and movers are removing much of the artwork and ornate furnishings. One of them curiously wanders through the rooms, until he comes upon Violetta, bedridden and looking pallid and weak, and he stares at her with undisguised awe. She is startled to see him and follows him to see what he is doing. As she gazes down the long hallway, her delirious mind drifts back to a happier time, and via flashback we are transported to a lavish party she is hosting to celebrate her recovery from an illness. One of her guests, Count Gastone, has brought with him his friend, the young nobleman Alfredo Germont, who has long adored Violetta from afar. She becomes dizzy and retires to her bedroom to recover; he follows her and declares his love. At first Violetta rejects him, telling him love means nothing to her, but she is touched by his concern and offers him a camellia, telling him to return it when it has wilted. He promises to see her the next day.
