Dark Secrets is a 1923 American silent feature drama film directed by Victor Fleming and starring Dorothy Dalton. Its survival status is classified as unknown, which suggests that it is a lost film.

Synopsis

Ruth Rutherford is engaged to Lord Wallington, a British army officer. He presents her with a magnificent horse named "Untameable." Ruth is thrown while riding the steed and receives an injury to the spine which cripples her. Unable to walk, she breaks her engagement to Wallington, who returns to his regiment in Cairo, where he strives to forget Ruth in scenes of wild dissipation. Later Ruth also goes to Cairo, where she is attended by a faithful servant named Biskra. She attracts the attention of a famous surgeon known as Dr. Ali. The latter promised to cure her on condition that she becomes his wife. Ruth unwillingly consents. Dr. Ali cures her. He attempts to attack Ruth and is slain by Biskra. Ruth, controlled by the dead man's power again becomes a cripple. Biskra appears, having broken from the jail in which he was confined for killing Ali and seemingly tries to assassinate Wallington. Ruth leaps from her chair to protect her lover and suddenly discovers that the spell is broken and that she can walk. The lovers are united.

In the story, which opens in the early 1900s, Jannings plays August Schiller, a bank clerk in Milwaukee who is happy with both his job and his family. But when bank officials ask him to transport $1,000 in securities to Chicago, he meets a blond seductress on the train, who sees what he is carrying. She flirts with him, convinces him to buy her a bottle of champagne, and takes him to a saloon run by a crook. The next morning he awakes alone in a dilapidated bedroom, without the securities. He finds the woman, and at first pleads with her, then intimidates her to return the stolen securities. He is knocked unconscious by the saloon owner and dragged to a nearby railroad track.

Pete Sandidge (Spencer Tracy) is the reckless pilot of a North American B-25 Mitchell bomber flying out of England during World War II. He is in love with Women Airforce Service Pilot Dorinda Durston (Irene Dunne), a civilian pilot ferrying aircraft across the Atlantic. "Nails" Kilpatrick (James Gleason), Pete's commanding officer, first transfers Pete and his crew to a base in Scotland and then offers him a transfer back to America to be a flying instructor. Dorinda has a feeling that Pete's "number is up" and begs him to accept. Pete agrees, but goes out on one last mission with his best friend Al Yackey (Ward Bond) to check out a German aircraft carrier. Wounded after an attack by an enemy fighter, Pete has his crew bail out before bombing the ship and crashing into the sea.

Danny (John Garfield) inherits two houses, so Pilon (Spencer Tracy) and his poor, idle friends move in. One of them, Pirate, (Frank Morgan) is saving money which Pilon endeavors to steal, until he discovers that it is being collected to purchase a golden candlestick which he intends to burn for St. Francis to honor the Pirate's dead dog. One of the houses burns down, so Danny allows his friends to move into the other house with him, and in gratitude Pilon tries to make life better for his friend. Things are fine at first until Danny's passion for a lovely girl (Hedy Lamarr) causes him to actually go to work. A misunderstanding caused by Pilon about a vacuum cleaner causes Danny to lose it; he becomes drunk and a bit crazy. He almost dies in an accident in the cannery but through Pilon's prayers, is restored to health. He then marries his sweetheart with the promise that he will become a fisherman now that Pilon has found the money to buy a boat.
