Heera (Dev Anand) has two passions in his life, namely his love for Reema (Raakhee), an air-hostess, and photography. When Reema passes away during an airplane accident, Heera is left with only passion in life - photography. During one of his photographic sessions with Raja Saab (Rehman), a priceless diamond is stolen by Panna (Zeenat Aman), and is hidden in Heera's car. Asha (Mala Sinha) is in court facing a murder trial. Puran (Bharat Bhushan), a lawyer and journalist, takes the case. The story then goes into flashback, showing Asha working in the rationing office just after the war. She comes from a poor family and is the sole earning member. She also has six younger sisters to take care of. Puran comes from a rich family; his father is Seth Mulchand, a business man. However, Puran decides to work for a newspaper, as a reporter. Asha likes Puran's articles exposing corruption and black-marketing, and his articles on working women. She gets interested in meeting the writer. The two meet in her office at her place of work. While leaving, Puran manages to drop his papers, and they get jumbled up with the papers on Asha's desk. Her paycheck, which was lying on the desk, is picked up by Puran by mistake along with his own papers. She meets Puran again to get her check back.

During a jail riot instigated by jailed convict Jaggu (Joginder), the Jailer, Arun Mehra's (Dev Anand) life is threatened, and another convict Dinesh (Satish Kaul), risks his life to save Arun. Arun and his mom, Mrs. Mehra (Sulochana) find out that Dinesh is on death-row for killing noted Professor Ashok Verma. Arun does not believe that Dinesh is guilty, and so he arranges his escape and as a result he has not only the police, including his very own dad, Inspector General of Police Mehra (Pran) after him on a manhunt, but also underworld don Master (Ajit Khan) and his men; and a cold-hearted female assassin (Zeenat Aman) who has reserved just two bullets in her gun for Arun and Dinesh. A newspaper editor, Shrivastav, is killed when he was about to expose the underworld links of a very rich and influential person. He calls over his friend, Inspector Shekhar, to talk to him about the threat he receives from the underworld. Srivastav dies by the time Shekhar arrives. He remembers that he saw a suspicious person by the elevator and borrows a lady's car to chase him. The lady (Shakila) throws a fit (and even throws the car keys in the mud when it is raining outside) and they lose the chase. In the morning the two return home when they find the keys. Meanwhile, on the crime scene, petty pickpocket Master (Johnny Walker) is found at scene and confesses seeing the whole murder. Shekhar uncovers some of the gang, and Master identifies the killer (Mehmood) who is put in jail.

The film starts with Madan Gopal (Dev Anand) being thrown out of his house for not paying the rent. He goes to visit his friend, who has been helping him collect his mail, and finds a letter from his uncle, Manoharlal. Manoharlal writes that he is willing eleven lakh rupees (nine lakhs of cash and two lakhs worth of property), to Madan. It was originally willed to his sister-in-law's son, Kuldeep (Krishan Dhawan). After seeing Kuldeep's bad behaviour, though, Manoharlal decides to give the money to Madan.

Sagar (Vinod Khanna) defies his wealthy family by marrying a poor girl named Sarita (Rekha) and therefore is cut out of his family's inheritance. He then decides to make a living by driving a cab. Sarita feels guilty that he left his wealth behind to marry her. She raises Rs.10,000 from a loan shark but lies to her husband saying she got it from her uncle. She then asks her husband to give the money to a stockbroker friend to invest. When the investment doesn't result in healthy dividends, Sarita becomes desperate to raise the money to repay the loan shark. She inadvertently gets hooked up with a madam (Nadira) who sends clients to her apartment. Sarita gets into humorous incidents as she avoids contact with her male clients.
