Daya is a 1998 Malayalam period film written by M. T. Vasudevan Nair, directed by Venu, and starring Manju Warrier in the lead role. The storyline of the film is adapted from One Thousand and One Nights. Vishal Bhardwaj scored the music of the film. It was the directorial debut of cinematographer Venu. He won the awards for best debut director at the National Film Awards and Kerala State Film Awards.
Synopsis
The film is set in the Middle-East in the pre-Islam period. It is about the adventures of a lively and intelligent slave girl named Daya (Manju Warrier). Mansoor (Krishna), the son of an aging and wealthy nobleman, is used to an extravagant way of life. Squandering his wealth after his father's death, he is forsaken by all his friends, except the loyal slave girl, Daya, who suggests that she be sold at the slave market for an exorbitant price. The envoys of the King interrupt the sale and take Daya to court, where she is showered with gifts. The King also allows her to live with Mansoor. But wild adventures never leave her alone, and she is forced to masquerade as a man. As a man she travels to another kingdom. She intelligently escapes from bandits in a powerful horse riding scene. She goes to another kingdom where the king is searching for a loyal minister. She in the disguise of a man passes all the difficult tests like an archery competition and a sword fighting duel. She lets herself get defeated by the king in a chess match and impresses the king. The king makes her the minister. The king's daughter gets infatuated by her thinking she is a man. She as the minister intelligently takes revenge on everyone who betrayed her. She finally meets a confessional Mansoor and decides to elope with him while the king is planning her marriage with the princess. The king finds out the truth and decides to punish Daya - a woman who dared to challenge men. The people support Daya's wisdom and finally gives her forgiveness.Actors

Radhakrishnan (Dileep) is dysfunctionally brought up like a girl by his grandmother (Sukumari) who wanted a granddaughter. There by, he becomes effeminate and milquetoast. She calls him Radha, which becomes his nickname. Radha's father Divakaran (Lal) goes to jail for a murder that he accidentally commits. Radha is ridiculed among the people in the village but he is not worried and spends time with the girls singing and teaches dancing. His best friend is Malu (Gopika) who is wooed by Kumaran (Indrajith), a local money lender and the son of the man whom Radha’s father had killed.

The film narrates the incidents in the life of a gynaecologist and five women who come into his life each with unconventional/illegitimate pregnancies. Lal acts as the gynaecologist and Asha Sharreth does the role of doctor's wife. Sanusha plays the role of an eighteen-year-old girl who refuses to abort her child and reveal the child's father. In the end, she gives her baby to the gynaecologist and his wife who don't have children of their own. After some months, she visits the doctor's house and leaves him a book. And from reading one of the story in the book that she specially marked he figures out that she bore the child of her father. Rima's character is a nurse, while Geetha plays an elderly woman who gets pregnant through artificial insemination. Aju Varghese appears as Ajmal who has strong feelings for Fatima. However, due to their height difference, he is unable to confide his love for her. Sandra Thomas plays the role of another expectant woman who bears her boyfriend's child which she wants to conceive only if her husband dies and Joy Mathew acts as her husband.

Trelkovsky (Roman Polanski), a quiet and unassuming man, rents an apartment in Paris whose previous tenant, Egyptologist Simone Choule, attempted to commit suicide by throwing herself out the window and through a pane of glass below. He visits Choule in the hospital but finds her entirely in bandages and unable to talk. Whilst still at Choule's bedside, Trelkovsky meets Simone's friend, Stella (Isabelle Adjani), who has also come to visit. Stella begins talking to Simone, who becomes aware of her visitors. Initially showing some signs of agitation upon seeing them, Choule soon lets out a disturbing cry, then dies. It isn't clear which of the two has caused this reaction. Apparently unaware that Choule is now dead, Trelkovsky tries to comfort Stella but dares not say that he never knew Simone, instead pretending to be another friend. They leave together and go out for a drink and a movie (1973's Enter The Dragon), where they fondle each other. Outside the theatre they part ways.

After the Huns, led by the ruthless Shan Yu, invade Han China, the Chinese emperor begins to command a general mobilization. Each family is given a conscription notice, requiring one man from each family to join the Chinese army. When Fa Mulan hears that her elderly father Fa Zhou, the only man in their family, is once more to go to war, she becomes anxious and apprehensive. She decides to deal with this herself by disguising herself as a man so that she can go to war instead of her father. When her family learns of Mulan's departure, they all become anxious. Grandmother Fa, Mulan's grandmother, prays to the family ancestors for Mulan's safety. The ancestors then order their "Great Stone Dragon" to protect Mulan. The ancestors are unaware that the statue of Great Stone Dragon failed to come to life, and that Mushu, a small dragon, is the one to go and protect Mulan.

Premachandran (Mohanlal) is a carpenter who lives along with his father, Balan Master (Bharath Gopi), and works along with his friend, Manikandan (Innocent). They are now working on a house near the house of a rich landlord. Kanmani (Meera Jasmine), who was sold by her mother, works in that house as a servant and is ill-treated. Seethamma (KPAC Lalitha) lives along with her daughter, Kumari (Muthumani), who has a liking towards Premachandran. One night, Premachandran goes to his workplace to take his tools. He sees Kanmani leaving the house and is puzzled. He follows her. She was on the verge of committing suicide when Premachandran rescues her. He gives her shelter in one room in a building owned by Chettiyar (Oduvil Unnikrishnan), telling Chettiyar that his friend did not get the bus to go back home. Kanmani dresses up as a boy by the name of Velayuthan Kutty and soon starts working with Manikandan and Premachandran. Balan Master starts liking the disguised boy. One day, Premachandran tells Kanmani that he has planned to rescue her by sending her to Tamil Nadu to work in a banian company where Premachandran's friend is working. Kanmani refueses to go. Premachandran accidentally confesses to Manikandan that Velayuthan Kutty is actually the missing Kanmani. Manikandan has no peace and shouts out the truth in the middle of the night. Two policemen, accidentally hear this and take Premachandran and Kanmani into custody.

A criminologist narrates the tale of the newly engaged couple Brad Majors and Janet Weiss who find themselves lost and with a flat tire on a cold and rainy late November evening.
