Malraux wrote the novel L'Espoir, or Man's Hope, which was basis for the film. The director won the 1945 Prix Louis Delluc award.
The crash of Spanish Republican Air Force serial 'Ñ' Potez 540 plane near Valdelinares inspired André Malraux to make this movie based on his novel.
The book and the film are both cited as having been completed in various years. The novel was published in French in 1937 and in English in 1938. The film uses war footage from 1938 and was realized during 1938-1939. It was finished in July 1939 and shown twice in Paris, but Francoist regime applied pressure to censor it. All known copies were destroyed in World War II. A copy was found and the film was released again in 1945. In Spain, it was banned and was not screened until 1977.

Après plusieurs années d'efforts et d'abnégation, Yoshikazu est devenu un pilote confirmé. À l’automne 1941, il embarque à bord du Akagi, navire de la flotte qui prend une direction inconnue. Quelques jours plus tard, l'équipage réuni sur le pont du bateau et lecture lui est donné de l'objectif de la mission : la flotte se dirige en direction d'Hawaï afin de couler la flotte américaine du Pacifique. Le 7 décembre 1941, il s'envole du porte-avions lors de l'attaque surprise de Pearl Harbor. De son côté, Tadaaki, lui aussi pilote, participe au large de la côte est de la Malaisie à l'attaque qui voit le cuirassé britannique HMS Prince of Wales et le croiseur de bataille HMS Repulse coulés par les bombardiers japonais.

The bucolic beauty of Greece's Ionian islands has been invaded by Italy, bringing a large Italian garrison and a few Germans to the tranquil island of Cephallonia, which immediately surrenders. Captain Antonio Corelli, a Greek-speaking officer of the Italian 33rd Acqui Infantry Division with an irrepressibly jovial personality and a passion for the mandolin, and who trains his battery of men – who have never fired a shot – in choral singing, initially alienates a number of the villagers, including Pelagia. Western & Atlantic Railroad train engineer Johnnie Gray (Keaton) is in Marietta, Georgia to see one of the two loves of his life, his fiancee Annabelle Lee (Marion Mack)—the other being his locomotive, The General—when the American Civil War breaks out. He hurries to be first in line to sign up with the Confederate Army, but is rejected because he is too valuable in his present job; unfortunately, Johnnie is not told this reason and is forcibly ejected from the office when he tries to enlist surreptitiously. On leaving, he runs into Annabelle's father and brother, who beckon to him to join them in line, but he sadly walks away, giving them the impression that he does not want to enlist. Annabelle coldly informs Johnnie that she will not speak to him again until he is in uniform.

Septembre 1942, au large de Cape Town, en Afrique du Sud. Le "RMS Laconia", qui vient de quitter le port, fait route vers l’Angleterre avec 2 000 passagers à son bord ainsi que 1 800 prisonniers italiens. Les fumées du navire sont bientôt repérées par un U-Boot. Sa taille laissant supposer qu’il peut transporter des troupes, la décision est prise de le torpiller. Cela fait, le sous-marin ne quitte pas immédiatement les lieux. Découvrant le sort des prisonniers italiens, mais aussi de civils, le capitaine, se référant à un code d’honneur maritime, ordonne l’organisation du sauvetage, arbore une croix rouge dans l’attente d’un bâtiment français envoyé par Vichy. Mille personnes seront sauvées. Peu après, ce sous-marin sera coulé par les forces alliées tandis que l’amiral allemand Dönitz signera le "Laconia order" interdisant à l’armée allemande de procéder au moindre sauvetage.
