Death by Design is a 1995 science documentary directed by Peter Friedman and Jean-François Brunet of the Ecole Normale Supérieure in Paris which focuses on Cell biology, with an emphasis on programmed cell death and why our lives depend on it. Featured are prominent biologists such as Nobel prize laureate, Rita Levi-Montalcini (along with her artist twin sister Paola Levi-Montalcini), Martin Raff, Polly Matzinger, Pierre Goldstein, Nobel Laureate Roert Horvitz, among others. The documentary is notable for its combination of a whimsical use of metaphors with scientific rigor, and incorporates animation, micro-cinematography, and scenes from old Hollywood films and stock footage, including Busby Berkley choreographed dance routines. The opening scene features the trailer from the '50s science fiction film It Came From Outer Space.

Cecilia et Joaquim, jeune couple d'amoureux, sont sur le point de se marier quand Joaquim est renversé par une voiture. Le diagnostic des médecins est sans appel : le jeune homme restera tétraplégique. Cecilia se prépare à affronter l'avenir avec son mari paralysé. Mais ce dernier sombre dans la dépression et préfère couper les ponts. De son côté, Marie, mariée depuis quinze ans et mère de trois enfants, est rongée par un sentiment de culpabilité : elle conduisait la voiture responsable de l’accident. Elle demande alors à Niels, son mari médecin, de se rapprocher de soutenir la fiancée de Joaquim pour la soutenir dans cette épreuve.

Pendant l'été 2000 en Espagne, Fulton et Pepe suivent, pour en réaliser le making of, le tournage de ce qui aurait dû être The Man Who Killed Don Quixote, un film que projette de réaliser Terry Gilliam depuis plusieurs années. Jean Rochefort doit tenir le rôle de Don Quichotte. Johnny Depp et Vanessa Paradis font également partie de la distribution. Cependant, le tournage tourne vite à la catastrophe : problèmes d'organisation, conflits personnels, vols intempestifs de F16 de l'armée de l'air américaine basée en Espagne sur le site de tournage, pluie diluvienne dans un lieu désertique qui dégrade le matériel et altère le décor – le désert servant de lieu de tournage devenant verdoyant le lendemain du déluge –, maladie de Jean Rochefort qui empêchera celui-ci de jamais remonter à cheval et l'écarte des plateaux.
