Paprika Steen (born 3 November 1964 as Kirstine Steen) is a Danish actress and film director best known for her performances in the films Festen, The Idiots and Open Hearts. Steen was the first Danish actress since Karin Nellemose in 1994 to win both Best Actress (for Okay) and Best Supporting Actress (Open Hearts) in the same year at the Robert Festival, the Danish equivalent of the Oscars.

Biography

Steen was born on 3 November 1964 in Frederiksberg, Denmark, the daughter of musician and conductor Niels Jørgen Steen and the actress Avi Sagild. She is the sister of musician and actor Nikolaj Steen. Steen applied to the Acting School of Odense Theatre 13 times before being accepted and attending from 1988 to 1992. Steen performed on stage in Dr. Dante productions and been associated with the Royal Danish Theatre since 1997. In 1997 she wrote and performed in the satirical television series Lex og Klatten. In 1998, Steen became an active participant in the Dogme 95 film movement as the only performer to appear in the first three movies: Lars Von Trier's The Idiots, The Celebration by Thomas Vinterberg, and Søren Kragh-Jacobsen's Mifune's Last Song.

Steen won her first Bodil Award as the Best Supporting Actress in 2000 for Den eneste ene (The One and Only). In 2002, Steen won the Bodil Award, Robert Award and American Film Institute's Grand Jury Prize for her leading role as the controlling loudmouth Nete in Okay. The same year she also won both the Bodil and Robert awards as Best Supporting Actress in Elsker dig for evigt (Open Hearts).

Steen made her directorial debut in with the 2004 tragedy-drama Lad de små børn... (Aftermath) about the emotional trauma of a young couple after the death of their daughter. The film received awards at several film festivals including the Lübeck Nordic Film Days and the Film by the Sea International Festival. In 2007, Steen directed her second feature, the comedy film With Your Permission (Til døden os skiller).

In 1998, Erik (Thure Lindhardt), a Danish artist living in New York, meets Paul (Zachary Booth), a lawyer, through a phone sex hotline. Clearly attracted to each other, they share an intimate moment and have sex. Erik later visits a man named Russ (Sebastian La Cause) who seems more interested in showing off his muscles to Erik than having sex. Erik sees Paul again, and tells him about how he broke up with his ex-boyfriend Paolo, who was HIV-positive. Erik confides to his friend Claire (Julianne Nicholson) on how he is happier now with Paul than he was with Paolo. Meanwhile, Paul asks Erik to keep quiet about his drug use and gets Erik high. Paul, who was closeted before meeting Erik, sees his ex-girlfriend while visiting an art gallery with Erik, who tries to persuade Paul to introduce him to her. While away from the city, Erik calls his doctor for some test results and learns that he is HIV-negative. Later, Paul throws a surprise birthday party for Erik.

Hairdresser Ida, who has recently ended a successful breast cancer treatment, returns home to find her husband Leif cheating on her. Le film se déroule dans l'Arctique au début du XXI siècle. Un couple d'ours se prépare à la venue au monde de leur ourson en bavardant avec un corbeau maladroit. Par malheur, ils sont pris en chasse par une meute de loups, auxquels ils échappent après une poursuite mouvementée ; mais quelque temps après, l'ourse donne naissance à un ourson mort-né. Au même moment, l'épouse d'un chasseur inuit accouche d'un fils en pleine santé qu'ils nomment « Petit Ours ». Pendant ce temps, l'ourse est inconsolable après la mort de son petit. L'ours tente de la consoler par tous les moyens, puis, désespéré, erre sur la glace et arrive aux abords de la maison du chasseur au moment où celui-ci est absent. Il s'approche de la maison, aperçoit le nouveau-né et profite d'un moment où la mère a le dos tourné pour entrer dans la maison et s'emparer du petit. Malgré les efforts de la femme, il parvient à s'enfuir. Dès son retour, le chasseur se lance à la poursuite de l'ourse mais ne parvient pas à le rattraper.
