The Curse (German:Der Fluch) is a 1924 Austrian drama film directed by Robert Land and starring Lilian Harvey, Oscar Beregi and Albert Heine.

The film marked the screen debut of Lilian Harvey who would go on to become one of the top stars at the German box office during the late Weimar and early Nazi eras. Harvey was in Vienna at the time because she was appearing in a stage revue show,

Synopsis

A young Jewish woman in an Eastern European shtetl struggles to reconcile her aspirations with her duty to her family. As her lifestyle grows wilder, her mother is shocked by her immoral behaviour and commits suicide by drowning - repeating "the curse" which has haunted the family for centuries.

C'est le salon des artistes de l'académie des beaux-arts de Paris : au milieu des danseurs, une modèle s'écroule. Un médecin constate qu'elle est épuisée et prescrit un séjour de repos à Davos. Mais la jeune fille n'a pas d'argent. Mascotte, une modèle présente lors de la scène et en vogue auprès des artistes parisiens, commence une vente aux enchères d'œuvres d'art du salon. Mais beaucoup ne se vendent pas, on est loin des 20 000 francs qu'elle espère. Vient alors un nu la représentant. Dans la salle, on crie : "10 000 francs, mais pour l'original !". Mascotte prend d'abord mal qu'on la traite comme une prostituée. Mais par altruisme, elle consent à faire l'objet d'une enchère. Jean Dardier est là. Il ne souhaite pas qu'elle tombe dans les mains d'un vieux bourgeois libidineux. Il remporte l'enchère.

In a noisy print shop, a disgraced police detective named Hofmeister (Karl Meixner) escapes from pursuing criminals' attacks. Hofmeister telephones his former superior Inspector Karl Lohmann (Otto Wernicke) and explains frantically that he has discovered a huge criminal conspiracy. Before he can disclose the identity of responsible criminal, the lights go out, shots are fired, and Hofmeister becomes mad. Hofmeister vanishes only to be found later singing every time he feels watched, and he is institutionalized at Professor Baum's asylum.

Completely broke, the three friends Willy, Kurt and Hans strand on a country road when they run out of fuel. They sell their car to acquire a nearby filling station. Taking turns at serving as petrol attendants the three independently of one another fall in love with the handsome and well-off customer Lilian, anxiously hiding their romance with each other. However, the young women only reciprocates Willy's feelings and invites him and his friends to a luxury restaurant in order to establish clarity. When Willy learns about his luck, he immediately renunciates his victory out of deference to his friends.
