Lorenz Darrandt fut prisonnier de guerre pendant de nombreuses années. Les expériences de cette situaution l'ont profondément troublé et il lutte pour prendre pied dans l'Allemagne d'après-guerre. Il retrouve l'espoir quand il tombe amoureux de la jolie Wanda. Cependant Wanda est une prostituée sous l'influence de son proxénète. Lorenz tue le proxénète. Ludwig Darrandt, le frère aîné de Lorenz et un avocat à succès, fait croire que le meurtrier est un mendiant innocent. Ce dernier est reconnu coupable et doit aller en prison. Lorenz n'a rien à craindre maintenant. Les affres de la conscience le poussent à se suicider avec Wanda.

In the early twentieth century, after the death of her mother, the young Manuela is admitted to a boarding school for girls where the headmistress imposes a rigid discipline. Manuela projects all her affection onto Miss Elisabeth von Bernburg, the only supervisor to show her any kindness. At boarding school, at a party where alcohol flows a little freely, Manuela creates a scandal by loudly proclaiming her love for Miss von Bernburg. The middle-aged Marquis de Sade arrives at his ancestral estate of La Coste, having escaped incarceration. Different from You and Me (§175) centers around the well-to-do Teichmann family in Berlin. Klaus, the 17-year-old son of Werner and Christa Teichmann, has begun to lead a life that increasingly worries his parents. A Prussian officer (David Bowie) returns home to Berlin following the end of the Great War. En 1777, après une dispute avec le Prince-archevêque de Salzbourg Hieronymus von Colloredo-Mannsfeld, Mozart part avec sa mère pour Paris.
