The Last Ones Shall Be First (German: Die Letzten werden die Ersten sein) is a 1957 West German crime film directed by Rolf Hansen, based on the short play The First and the Last by John Galsworthy. It was entered into the 7th Berlin International Film Festival.

Synopsis

Lorenz Darrandt fut prisonnier de guerre pendant de nombreuses années. Les expériences de cette situaution l'ont profondément troublé et il lutte pour prendre pied dans l'Allemagne d'après-guerre. Il retrouve l'espoir quand il tombe amoureux de la jolie Wanda. Cependant Wanda est une prostituée sous l'influence de son proxénète. Lorenz tue le proxénète. Ludwig Darrandt, le frère aîné de Lorenz et un avocat à succès, fait croire que le meurtrier est un mendiant innocent. Ce dernier est reconnu coupable et doit aller en prison. Lorenz n'a rien à craindre maintenant. Les affres de la conscience le poussent à se suicider avec Wanda.

Lulu, 14 ans, est sortie de la rue par le Dr. Schön, un éditeur. Elle voulait lui voler une montre, il en fera une dame. Comme il croit ne rien pouvoir lui apprendre, il la marie avec le docteur Goll. Elle se met à danser au son de son violon et devient un modèle pour le peintre Schwarz. Après que Schön et Goll partent l'atelier du peintre, Lulu essaie de séduire le pauvre artiste. Lorsque Goll revient à l'improviste, il les trouve dans une position ambiguë, fait une crise cardiaque et meurt. Dans l'atelier apparaît pour la première fois la comtesse Geschwitz, qui aime Lulu et veut faire un tour du monde avec elle.

Karin Mansdotter is the daughter of an ordinary soldier. Still King Erik of Sweden falls madly in love with her. This turn of fate is appreciated by his adviser Göran Persson because he lives in constant fear the nobles could find a way to increase their influence on the king. When Erik's plan to marry English princess Elizabeth Tudor fails, Persson condones Erik's decision to make Karin his Queen. The Swedish nobility resents this wedding.
