कहे पुकारके; translation: Call of the Earth) is a 1969 Hindi language film produced under banner Vaishali Films by Deenanath Shastri and directed by Dulal Guha. Jeetendra, Nanda, Kanhaiyalal, Durga Khote and Sanjeev Kumar play the lead with Tarun Bose, Abhi Bhattacharya, Jagdev, Leela Mishra, Asit Sen, Manmohan, A. K. Hangal and Amol Sen in the support cast. Laxmikant-Pyarelal scrored the music for this film with lyrics written by Majrooh Sultanpuri.

Synopsis

Kanhaiyalal plays a poor farmer living with his wife and two half brothers (played by Sanjeev Kumar and Jeetendra). Sanjeev Kumar studies law supported by his brothers while Jeetendra helps Kanhaiyalal in cultivating the piece of land they own. Kanhaiyalal loans some amount from local moneylender against this piece of land for Sanjeev Kumar's law studies. Jeetendra is also in love with this moneylender's daughter, played by Nanda. With the passage of time, industrialisation and circumstances compel the brothers to disperse. Married Sanjeev Kumar, after learning about the amount loaned by his brother, leaves his modern wife, brothers and decides to come back only after he has sufficient amount to repay the loan. On the other hand, Jeetendra moves to the city as a driver to earn livelihood. How the family values, proper education, righteousness and eternal bond between the brothers help them getting together forms the rest of the story.

The movie charts the emotional journey of Arjun (Manoj Tiwari). A college student with dreams of becoming an IPS officer, Arjun is basically a son of the soil. One day, when he is coming back to his village on a vacation with his bosom friend Deepak, a car accident changes his life dramatically. Deepak, who is driving the car, happens to run over a villager, Shankar, who subsequently succumbs to his injuries. Arjun, however, insists on taking the blame on himself and surrenders to the police.

Vijaykamal (played by Sanjeev Kumar) is a son of a rich Thakur Suraj Singh but has lost his mind. He sees his lover Sapna marry his neighbour Bihari (played by Shatrughan Sinha) and then commit suicide on the night of the Diwali party hosted by Bihari. This incident puts Vijay in shock. Thakur believes that if Vijay gets married, his mental health would improve. He hence approaches a tawaif Chand (played by Mumtaz) to pretend to be Vijay's wife and thus help him get better. But Chand receives cold treatment by Vijay's mother and his elder brother Kishore. Once, in a fit of madness, Vijay sexually assaults Chand. But later Chand becomes very friendly with Vijay and that starts improving his condition.

Kusum as a child gets married to Vrindavan in a small ceremony. After some time her father dies in a riot and blame erroneously comes to Vrindavan's father. Due to this, Vrindavan's father rejects Kusum to be his daughter-in-law. Kusum along with his brother and mother, moves to different village away from Vrindavan's family.Now they grow up and Kusum(now Hema Malini) considers herself as the wife of Vrindavan and rejects to marry anyone else. Eventually her mother dies and her brother Kunj (Asrani) stays single as he don't want to marry till he send his sister to in-laws. On the other side, Vrindavan's (now Jeetendra) father dies and he becomes a doctor. Oblivious to Kusum's feelings, he goes on to marry another girl Lakhi (Sharmila Tagore), who was also a victim of child marriage and has no one now. They had a son Charan (master Raju) and Lakhi dies after some time due to illness. He moves to his own village and starts practice there. Once, he happens to visit a wealthy patient in Kusum's village where Kusum recognizes him, though he fails to as he only knows her pet name, not real name. Gradually they come closer and Vrindavan's mother is happy to accept Kusum as daughter-in-law. But misunderstandings develop because Kusum considers them insensitive as they not only forgot what they have done to her family but also takes her for granted now. But Vrindavan, having soft corner for her still wishes that she would come to him. Kusum grows close to his son Charan and keeps him with her during endemic in Vrindavan's village. Finally, Vrindavan and Kusum are able to overcome egoistic barriers and unite with the blessings of her brother, Vrindavan's mother and little Charan.

Desperate to earn money to support his extended family, Mohan becomes entangled in a web of deceit when he tells a lie in order to obtain a secretarial job in the city with the wealthy Mr Rai. After his business partner leaves him penniless, Parvati's husband passes away, leaving behind two sons, Prabhakar (Satyen Kappu), Sudhakar (Jeetendra) and a dumb daughter Gauri (Meena T), on the verge of destitution. When Prabhakar grows up, he marries Pooja (Kanan Kaushal) and moves out. Meanwhile, as time passes, Sudhakar grows up, completes his schooling, gets a job out of the town and relocates. When Gauri is not allowed to marry Murli (Asrani), she commits suicide and so does Murli, calling for Sudhakar back home. Sudhakar marries wealthy Padma (Leena Chandavarkar) and brings her home. Padma dislikes playing second fiddle even to Parvati leading to disagreements in the household. Padma's pregnancy too fails to resolve any of the problems. Thus the couple re-locates to Padma's palatial house in the city, leaving an ailing Parvati on her own. The rest of the film shows how Padma understands the value of family ties and brothers, Prabhakar and Sudhakar, get together to unite the family.
