Desperate to earn money to support his extended family, Mohan becomes entangled in a web of deceit when he tells a lie in order to obtain a secretarial job in the city with the wealthy Mr Rai. He says he isn't married, but he is. Mr Rai has a daughter with a heart condition. In the beginning of the film she uses a wheelchair, but Mohan has more than a mild therapeutic effect on her. She is soon up and running - running after him. Meanwhile, back in the village, the money he has been sending home is being filched by his greedy sister. Soon, mother, wife and a flock of children come looking for him and Mohan finds himself leading a double life in an increasingly desperate effort to avoid all parties learning the truth.

When the rulers of Malwa, Pushpapuri and Paanchal find out that their respective kingdoms are under attack by Jung forces, they consolidate their wealth, hide it underground surrounded by 3 statutes of Hindu Deities, and hide its location in 3 different necklaces. The necklaces are then handed over from generation to generation of their respective queens. 200 years later, Shamsher Jung attacks and takes over the kingdom of Malwa, forcing Maharaj Dharampal Singh to flee, and he is separated from his wife, and two sons, Jay and Vejay. Years later, Dharampal is still in hiding away from his wife. Jay has been brought by a bandit named Bhavani Singh, and is now known and feared as Sher Singh; Vejay is the Senapati of none other than Malwa's Maharaj, Diler Jung, the son of Shamsher. Everyone's path will collide, albeit unknowingly, when they confront each other and race to be the first to take possession of the hidden wealth.

Chiranjeev (Raj Kapoor) lives a wealthy lifestyle along with his father, Kashiram (Raj Mehra), and three siblings: two sisters, one of whom is dumb, and a younger brother. While on a trip, his friend, Mohan (Om Prakash), falls ill due to alcohol, and gets treated at an Ashram. This is where Chiranjeev meets with an employee, Sharada (Meena Kumari), who lives a poor lifestyle with her father, Ram Sharan. Chiranjeev and Sharada fall in love with each other, and he promises to get his father's permission and return to get married to her. On his way home he has an accident, and though he does survive after being treated by tribal people, he returns to the Ashram several days later and is informed that Sharada is now married to a wealthy and much older man. Heart-broken and devastated, Chiranjeev returns home only to get another shock: the male Sharada has married is none other than his very own father. Depressed and deeply frustrated, he takes to alcohol in a big way. Sharada talks him out of this, he repents and on her insistence, marries Chanchal (Shyama), who come from a reputed family background. Changayya (Subba Rao) is a wealthy Sowkar (businessman) whose son Satyam (N.T. Rama Rao) is studying in the city. His neighbour is Ramayya (Srivatsa). Changayya is affectionate towards his daughter Subbulu (Janaki) and wants to make her his daughter-in-law. Satyam also likes this idea. But due to some conflict in the village courtesy Bangarayya, Ramayya provides the police witness against Changayya citing his hand present in the messy affair. The two families are thereafter estranged. They start off with petty fights, getting worse every day culminating with Satyam and Ramayya's son Narayana (Sivaram) ending up in jail after being framed. The local goonda Sunnapu Rangadu (S.V. Ranga Rao) plans to rob Changayya's place, but his plans are spoiled by Subbulu and Ramayya. Both the families end their differences, and become friendly once again. At the end, Satyam and Subbulu marry and live happily.
