The film is written and produced by Bernd Eichinger, and based upon the books Inside Hitler's Bunker, by historian Joachim Fest; Until the Final Hour, the memoirs of Traudl Junge, one of Hitler's secretaries (co-written with Melissa Müller); Albert Speer's memoirs, Inside the Third Reich; Hitler's Last Days: An Eye–Witness Account, by Gerhard Boldt; Das Notlazarett unter der Reichskanzlei: Ein Arzt erlebt Hitlers Ende in Berlin by Doctor Ernst-Günther Schenck; and Siegfried Knappe's memoirs, Soldat: Reflections of a German Soldier, 1936–1949.
The film was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.
Synopsis
Downfall begins with footage of the real Traudl Junge expressing guilt and shame for admiring Hitler in her youth. The film continues showing Hitler (Bruno Ganz) hiring Junge (Alexandra Maria Lara) as his secretary at the Wolf's Lair in East Prussia in November 1942.Actors

The film narrates the last two years of the princess' life, beginning with events when Diana (Naomi Watts) divorces Charles, Prince of Wales. She falls in love with Pakistani Heart Surgeon, Dr. Hasnat Khan (Naveen Andrews). The film depicts her historic tours of Angola, in her campaign against the use of land mines. Trips to causes in Australia, Pakistan, New York, Bosnia, Italy and ultimately Paris, France are also shown, with recreations of the fashions she wore in real life. Her desire for a life with Khan ends due to his wish for a private life and objections to her celebrity. The film depicts her dating of Egyptian Dodi Fayed as an attempt to make Khan jealous, but it ends with the car crash that killed Diana, Fayed and Fayed's driver at Pont Alma Tunnel, in Paris, France - however there is no reconstruction of the crash scene.

After the space shuttle Patriot crashes on Earth, a fungus-like alien lifeform is discovered on the remaining parts scattered over US territory. In 1967, the Shah of Iran, Mohammed Reza Pahlavi, visits West Berlin to attend a performance at the Deutsche Oper. Angered at the Shah's repressive policies in governing Iran, a number of young Germans show up to protest his appearance. The film opens in 1938. Dominic Matei (Tim Roth), is a 70-year-old professor of linguistics. On the eve of World War II, Dominic attempts to visit the Café Select but is denied access due to wearing his pyjamas. Dominic realises that he is getting no younger, and has essentially failed his aim in life – to fully discover the origin of human language. His tireless labours have condemned him to a solitary existence, often spent pining after Laura (Alexandra Maria Lara), the love of his youth. Intent on committing suicide, Dominic travels to Bucharest, the city where he and Laura met at university. He is struck by lightning. In hospital, he is initially diagnosed by Professor Stanciulescu (Bruno Ganz) to be dying of his burns. However, Stanciulescu is startled when his patient regenerates into a much younger man. The Professor helps Dominic out of the hospital so as to continue studying him. Shortly afterwards, Romania is occupied by the Nazis, whose interests are aroused by Stanciulescu’s miracle patient.

In September 1939, Władysław Szpilman (Adrien Brody), a Polish-Jewish pianist, is playing live on the radio in Warsaw when the station is bombed during Nazi Germany's invasion of Poland which caused the outbreak of World War II. Hoping for a quick victory, Szpilman celebrates with his posh family at home when learning that Britain and France have declared war on Germany. German troops soon enter Warsaw and the Nazi authorities implement measures to identify, isolate, financially ruin and reduce the Jewish population in Warsaw. Jews are ordered to provide their own identifying armbands with the Star of David.

Septembre 1942, au large de Cape Town, en Afrique du Sud. Le "RMS Laconia", qui vient de quitter le port, fait route vers l’Angleterre avec 2 000 passagers à son bord ainsi que 1 800 prisonniers italiens. Les fumées du navire sont bientôt repérées par un U-Boot. Sa taille laissant supposer qu’il peut transporter des troupes, la décision est prise de le torpiller. Cela fait, le sous-marin ne quitte pas immédiatement les lieux. Découvrant le sort des prisonniers italiens, mais aussi de civils, le capitaine, se référant à un code d’honneur maritime, ordonne l’organisation du sauvetage, arbore une croix rouge dans l’attente d’un bâtiment français envoyé par Vichy. Mille personnes seront sauvées. Peu après, ce sous-marin sera coulé par les forces alliées tandis que l’amiral allemand Dönitz signera le "Laconia order" interdisant à l’armée allemande de procéder au moindre sauvetage.
