It was Afghanistan's submission to the 77th Academy Awards for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, but was not accepted as a nominee. It was also screened in the Un Certain Regard section at the 2004 Cannes Film Festival. It won the Golden Dhow award at the 2005 Zanzibar International Film Festival.
Synopsis
Un pont, une rivière asséchée dans un paysage désolé, la guérite d'un gardien mal luné, une route qui se perd à l'horizon, un marchand qui pense le monde, un vieillard, un petit enfant, et puis l'attente. Rien ne bouge ou presque. Nous sommes en Afghanistan. Le vieil homme va annoncer à son fils qui travaille à la mine, le père du petit, qu'au village tous sont morts sous un bombardement. Il parle, il pense : enfer des souvenirs, des attentes, des remords, des conjectures, des soupçons. C'est une parole nue qui dit la souffrance, la solitude, la peur de n'être pas entendu...Comments

Le film retrace les quelques semaines que passe une jeune femme au chevet de son mari, inconscient parce que blessé à la nuque par une balle. L'histoire se passe dans une ville en proie à la guerre civile, qui pourrait être Kaboul. Livrée à elle-même dans un univers hostile, la jeune femme se réfugie avec ses deux filles chez sa tante, une femme indépendante. Mais elle revient quotidiennement dans sa maison prendre soin de son mari. Ces longs moments de veille, entrecoupés par les bruits de la guerre, l'intrusion de miliciens, la visite du mollah, seront l'occasion pour la jeune femme de confier ses états d'âme à son mari et petit à petit de lui livrer ses plus lourds et intimes secrets. Le blessé devient malgré lui syngué sabour, la pierre de patience à qui l'on confie ses souffrances, ses désirs et ses secrets.

Vikas Chandra (Vinod Mehra) and Aarti (Rekha) have recently married, and they move into their new apartment. One day they go out to watch a late night Hindi movie at a local cinema theatre. The movie gets over well after midnight, and as no cab is found this hour, they decide to walk home by foot. On the way, they are suddenly waylaid by four men, who assault Vikas, leaving him unconscious, and forcibly take Aarti with them. When Vikas regains his senses he finds himself in hospital with a head wound. He is informed that Aarti is in the same hospital, after being gang-raped and assaulted. This incident makes headlines in the media, and is also a subject of discussion by politicians during their election campaign. Vikas feels haunted by this incident, and does not know how to act further. Aarti, on the other hand, has been completely traumatised, and is unable to trust any male. Now the couple faces a serious crisis leading to a loveless relationship, and only a miracle can bring the old spark back into their married life.

In order to improve their lifestyle, village near Badaun, based Ghulam Hasan (Farooq Shaikh) decides to re-locate to Bombay, on the insistence of his close friend Lalulal Tiwari (Jalal Agha).
