Pagal Nilavu is in essence the story of Selvam(Murali) an aimless youth in Muttam(Kanyakumari Dist) who out of a sense of deep gratitude ends up joining the gang of Devaraj aka Periyavar(Sathyaraj) and the complications which arise when he falls in love with Jyothi(Revathi), the sister of Robert Manohar(Sarat Babu) an honest and committed police inspector who is newly posted to the town. Periyavar pretty much runs the town and though he helps people in need, he is a diabolical kingpin who will not compromise on his hold of the town for anything. He wins Selvam’s undying loyalty when he helps him with money and power at a critical juncture to save his mother. In this backdrop Robert takes charge and moves into the town with his sister and daughter. Being uncompromising in his morals, Robert is automatically drawn into a game of oneupmanship with Periyavar and his gang. He also consequentially cannot stand Periyavar’s chief henchman Selvam, and is consequentially drawn into continuous verbal and physical duels with him. Selvam meanwhile falls hook line and sinker to Jyothi(Revathi) and tries every trick in the book to woo her and eventually wins.

Jeevana Poratam is the story about the mismanagement and selfishness of the leaders of India. Many people had striven for the independence of the country, but when we got the independence then the scenario is totally opposite. Bharath (Sobhan Babu) has become the victim. Vijayasanthi and Sobhan are related and love each other..Meanwhile vijayasanthi gets a job in Sarat babu's office and sarat babu loves her. Vijaysanthi slowly falls for Sarat Babu seeing his wealth and neglects Sobhan Babu. She even gets engaged to Sarat Babu. At this time, Radhika enters his life. Due to circumstances, Sobhan Babu joins hands with Rao Gopalrao and becomes rich. Rajinikanth comes at this time and helps his brother to leave the bad people and everything ends well with Vijayasanthi losing her life in the course.

Chandrasekhar (Sarath Babu) is married to Mala (Santhakumari) and their marital life is miserable due to Mala's demonic behaviour. Chandrasekhar's sister Viji (Suhasini), who is brought up by him, is enthusiastic, naughty and fun-loving. She lives life on her own terms. One day she bumps into Ram (Mohan), a mechanic. Despite initial conflicts, they slowly become friends. Though good natured, Ram suffers from an inferiority complex and suspects everyone. Mala suspects that Chandrasekhar's classmate Ramya (Vanitha) is his concubine since he visits her often. Chandrasekhar learns of Ramya's love for him only after his marriage to Mala. Ramya remains single and they share a platonic relationship, which antagonises Mala. Pratap (Pratap K. Pothen) is a photographer and a distant relative of Chandrasekhar. He comes to Chennai from Calcutta and works for an agency. Though Pratap likes Viji, he does not propose to her.

Vishwa (Surya) and Nilani (Preetha) fall in love, her mother doesn't approve, but goes along with it. Complications arise when Surya's character exhibits "fashion" photos he's taken of Preetha, which further upsets Preetha's mother. Then it comes to light that Surya's father (Prakash Raj) had an affair, and things take a dramatic, tragic turn for the lovers. In the end, both families arrive at airport to prevent Preetha from boarding flight but to their bad luck they could not stop it. Preetha commits suicide by swallowing poison from her ring and Surya who gets hit by a wall turns into mentally challenged with behaviour of a child.
