S. S. Chandran (Tamil: எஸ். எஸ். சந்திரன்; died October 9, 2010) was a comedy actor, producer and politician from Tamil Nadu, India. He belonged to the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam party and was a Member of the Parliament representing Tamil Nadu in the Rajya Sabha, the upper house of the Indian Parliament.

Ashok (Rajasekhar) and Lakshmi (Meera Jasmine) are siblings, and their father, Sarvarayudu (Rajasekhar), who was a landlord of the village, and mother (Sujitha), die during their childhood. Ashok and Lakshmi turn inseparable. Lakshmi falls in love with a boy called Aakash (Aakash), but makes it clear that she would love or marry him only with the blessings and acceptance of her brother, which Ashok approves of. He also marries a girl named Nandini (Arthi Agarwal) on the same day. After their marriage, Aakash and Lakshmi lead a happy life along with Aakash's cousins and sisters-in-law. In a gap of seven years, Lakshmi has two daughters and a son. Then Nandini also becomes pregnant but suffers a miscarriage due to the intervention of one Kantham, who stays with her claiming to be her aunt. As Nandini's uterus was removed, Ashok turns childless and to please him Aakash and Lakshmi bring their children to cajole him. By the time Aakash returns to their house, his cousins cheat him and swindle the entire property. Aakash gets jailed in a cheque bounce case. Lakshmi and her children turn orphans. With the Kantham's advice, Nandini throws Lakshmi out of house and warns her not to try to meet her brother. With no way to save her husband and her family, Lakshmi commits suicide with her three children and on learning this Ashok also dies proving that they are inseparable even in death.

Kaalai is the do-gooder always ready with a helping hand. Literally, because when women are pushed around and shoved, it is Kaalai who rushes with his arms readily extended to support them. And this happens a bit too often. Kaalai falls for his sister's friend Kamakshi (Abita) who is tortured and harassed by her sister-in-law Nandini (Vichitra), and Kamakshi's mother and brother (Manorama - Mansur) are helpless spectators. Vellaichamy (Parthiban) was orphaned as an child and has been brought up by a Brahmin couple Sambasiva Iyer (K. Viswanath) and Savithri (Lakshmi). Sakthi (Karthik) is a spoiled rich child, with his mother (Sachu) and grandfather (Kaka Radhakrishnan) constantly doting on him with cash and gifts. His father (Vinu Chakravarthy) is worried that he has such a good-for-nothing son. Sakthi falls head over heels in love with Indhu (Rambha). Sakthivel’s uncle, Kundalakesi (Goundamani), aids Sakthi in declaring his love to Indhu. In the meantime, Sakthi's father meets his long-lost friend (Jaiganesh) and they agree on a marriage proposal for their children. Sakthi, (who wrongly believes that he is being forced into an arranged marriage) does not realize that Indhu is indeed Jayaganesh’s daughter and gets his cousin Mathi (Vivek) and Kundalakesi to misbehave and create a fight during the engagement. Eventually the truth is revealed Indhu is furious. Sakthi sees a girl called Latha (Indhu) committing suicide. Inspector (Madhan Bob) wrongly thinks they are a married couple and tries to marry them to each other but Sakthi escapes. Sakthi mistakenly hurts another girl (Vinodhini) whose father (S. S. Chandran) also thinks him her husband. Sakthi's cousin, Mathi, is a henpecked husband to a rich and arrogant wife (Anju) and lies to her that Vichithra is Sakthi's husband. At last, Sakthi is going to marry Indhu, but people who areknown to the three girls come and misbehave. The three girls explain the situation and make them understand what happened. Sakthi and Indhu get married.

Suriya, the main character, killed the villains who murdered his family and has been sent to jail. During his time in jail, a well-respected collector celebrates his daughter's birthday in prison. The collector's daughter is impressed by Surya's talent in singing and convinces her father to grant her special permission to learn music from him. During this time, they fall in love with each other and opposition grows from both the girl's parents and the police department they elope. They come to a remote town where they witness the murder of a collector in the railway station during broad daylight, but no one seems to care. They then see that the man who murdered the collector is the chief of the village, so they try to oppose him. In their time at the village, they learn about his past and change their mind about him. He promises them to get them married. The movie then moves towards the climax as whether the village chief will be successful in getting those two lovers married or the girl's father will be successful in separating them using the legal system against them.

The film is about Prabhu (Prabhu Deva) and Mani (Manivannan) who earn money through dubious means to support a few orphaned children. They steal a diamond but while escaping, Mani stuffs the diamond into a toy sitting in a car. Chasing the toy takes them to the house of K.D.Chandrasekhar (S. S. Chandran), a rich man in Ooty and with Mani posing as the longlost husband of KD's sister, they enter the household. Pooja (Maheshwari), KD's daughter, falls in love with Prabhu but just as he is being engaged to her, he finds out that her sister Indu (Meena) is the woman of his dreams, the woman he had lost his heart to after seeing her for a few minutes in Coimbatore. Vijay (Vijay) is a rich young business man, whose only one aim in life is to have fun, is the managing director of a big tea estate in Ooty and his company goes on a big loss because of his mismanagement. Vijay spends most of his time in partying and flirting with girls whenever he feels like. To manage the loss to his company, Vijay invites his father Rajasekar (who is in the United States) to come to India to sign some documents. As fate would have it, Vijay's father dies in a plane crash on his way to India. His maternal uncle (Manivannan) comes up with the idea of having another elderly person to act as Vijay's father for a while until the documents are signed. So they visit a senior home, where they meet Selvam (Sivaji Ganesan) and they request him to act as Vijay's father. He agrees to it and starts to act as Vijay's father.
