El valle de los miserables (English: The valley of the miserable) is a 1975 Mexican drama film. Based in the novel El Valle Nacional by Enrique Albuerne.

Synopsis

In 1909, the former Judge Cristobal Zamarripa Zamarripa is the owner of the Valle Nacional, the a plantation where snuff exploits workers, supported by the tyrant Porfirio Diaz, who sends political prisoners as slaves. Others are engaged with the promise of high wages, but end up owing all to the company store. All are tortured, raped or killed when they protest. Another rancher (whose brother was killed by Zamarripa), will be punished, but flees and becomes revolutionary. The Zamarripa minions betray each other and they flee of the revolutionaries, led by fugitive landowner. The prisoners, upon release, massacred all the Zamarripa Family.

Steven (Hugo Stiglitz), a US-born Mexican businessman, arrives in a Mexican fishing/resort village for a vacation on a yacht anchored off shore. One of the local fishermen, Colorado (Roberto Guzmán), takes Steven with him when he goes to haul in the sharks he has caught. Colorado is annoyed to learn that another shark has taken a huge bite out of one of his captured sharks. Steven says he feels bad for the sharks, then shrugs, "that's life." He then decides to scope to local beaches for sexy women. He sets his sights on Patricia (Fiona Lewis), an Englishwoman on vacation. They have a whirlwind romance but break up when Steven can't decide if he is in love with her. Steven is extremely jealous, however, when she begins a relationship with Miguel (Andrés García) a womanizing swimming instructor at the nearby resort hotel. While Steven stews on the yacht, Patricia and Miguel have sex. Then she goes skinny dipping in the ocean for a morning swim and is eaten by a large, apparently emphysemic, 19-foot-long (5.8 m) tiger shark.

A playboy serial killer (Hugo Stiglitz) seduces beautiful women under false pretenses, inviting them to his ranch/castle, to proceed to kill them in gruesome ways. He uses the flesh of the women to feed a great number of cats that he keeps in a pit, and keeps their heads as trophies, pickled inside glass jars. However, one woman he attempts to kill escapes. He runs after her, and gets a minor face injury during a struggle with her. The cats escape from the pit through a hole in a fence and, sensing the injury, attack and devour Stiglitz. The woman manages to escape in her car.
