Antonio Aguilar Barraza (17 May 1919 – 19 June 2007) was a Mexican singer, songwriter, film actor, film producer, and screenwriter. During his career, he recorded over 150 albums, which sold 25 million copies, and participated in more than 120 films. He was given the honorific nickname "El Charro de México" (The Horseman of Mexico) because he is credited with popularizing la charrería, considered to have originated in Mexico, to international audiences. To this day he has been the only Hispanic artist to sell out the Madison Square Garden of New York City for six consecutive nights in 1997.

Aguilar was best known for singing traditional Mexican folk songs (rancheras) and ballads (corridos) as well for his roles in films concerning rural themes, such as the Mexican Revolution. He won the Latin ACE Award for Best Actor for his portrayal of Emiliano Zapata in the 1970 epic film of the same name. He also portrayed Pancho Villa twice in film. In 1997, Aguilar was awarded the Special Golden Ariel for his "invaluable contribution and spreading of Mexican cinema".

With his second wife, popular singer and actress Flor Silvestre, he had two sons, Antonio Aguilar Jr. and Pepe Aguilar, who also became singers and actors. His family is known collectively as "La Dinastía Aguilar" (The Aguilar Dynasty).

Luis Aguilar, also Mexican actor/singer, is not related to this family.

In the contemporary era (circa 1973), two foreign tourists make a stop at the provincial town of Perales. Two small memorials surrounded by pebbles in a corner of a street attract their attention. On the meantime, two elderly veterans of the Mexican Revolution, Chelelo and Cornelio, come out from a nearby building to receive them. They explain to the tourists about the memorials and to whom are they in memory of. Chelelo then recounts the story of two revolutionary friends, Sub-lieutenant Valente Quintero and Major Atanasio Pizarro, who are fighting a battle in one of Perales' residential streets. Valente is severely injured when he is shot in front of the late General Gumersindo Carrillo's house where his widow, doña Elvira Peña, his daughter, Leonor Carrillo, and their housemaid, Carmen, reside. Leonor witnesses when Valente is shot and is decided to go out and help him, against her mother's wishes. Leonor then tells her mother that she is returning a favor that could have been made to her father, who helplessly died while bleeding in the midst of a forest. Leonor therefore runs across the street to get the town's drunkard physician, Doctor Plácido. Elvira, Carmen, and Leonor carry Valente into the house and lay him in a bed. Valente stays ill in bed for several days and his friend Atanasio later receives word about his survival. Atanasio is falls in love with the elegant and sophisticated Leonor and admires the conservative and sharp-tongued matron Elvira. Valente and Leonor also start a romantic relationship, which lead them to marriage. Atanasio, who is now a rich and alcoholic landowner, duels Valente for the love of Leonor on the night of their honeymoon. The conflict ends with both Valente and Atanasio being killed by one another.

The film opens in a cave with a close-up of Juan Chávez's (Luis Aguilar) silver-plated revolver as he glances at a "Wanted" poster that offers a reward, dead or alive, for his capture. A suspicious man follows Juan out of the cave, and traces him into a small town. There, he enters a bar called "La Patrona", whose bartender is Carmen (Lola Beltrán) who is infatuated with Juan. She serves him something to drink, and they converse, as a next scene focuses on a beautiful woman named Rosa (Flor Silvestre) who sings the song "Cariño bonito" as she waters her geraniums and watches her birds. At the end of her singing, her aunt (Emma Roldán) arrives at the house and tells her of Juan's return to the town. She replies that he came back for her to take her with him, and to prepare her clothes. When Rosa arrives at the bar, Juan responds to her coldly, and even depreciates her.
