Synopsis
"En ce temps-là, l’amour était de chasser ses enfants". Ainsi commence le récit qu’un vieil homme entreprend devant un magnétophone à l’attention de son fils parti vivre aux Etats-Unis. Après avoir longuement hésité, il se décide enfin à raconter un souvenir gravé à jamais dans sa mémoire : l’étrange spectacle d’un père et de son jeune garçon dans le wagon qui les emmenait en déportation. Et surtout l’extraordinaire volonté chez cet homme de profiter de chaque instant pour transmettre à son fils l’essentiel de ce qui aurait pu faire de lui un homme.Actors

À l'automne 1952, la France tente d'oublier les stigmates de la guerre. Hélène, sept ans, et son frère Michel, neuf ans, sont brusquement séparés de leurs parents. En instance de divorce, ceux-ci choisissent en effet de les confier à leurs grands-parents maternels qui résident à Lille. Entre une grand-mère un peu autoritaire et rigide et un grand-père taciturne obsédé par la guerre et le génocide nazi, Hélène tente de s'adapter à cette nouvelle vie. Mais bientôt, son identité juive lui est révélée en même temps que les récits des atrocités nazies distillés par son grand-père et son frère. La fillette, déjà fragilisée, fait peu à peu un amalgame entre la tragédie de l'Histoire et sa propre existence.

Dans une école d'art dramatique, au début du XX siècle, le metteur en scène Shimamura a pour objectif d'élargir son répertoire au théâtre étranger contemporain et de ne plus se cantonner aux seules représentations kabuki. À cette fin, il est autorisé à monter Maison de poupée d'Henrik Ibsen. Mais il recherche une actrice locale digne d'interpréter le rôle principal de Nora. La rencontre avec la comédienne Sumako Matsui est décisive. Celle-ci, deux fois malheureuse en amour et proche d'un état suicidaire, veut s'émanciper pleinement, à la fois comme femme et comme actrice. La pièce d'Ibsen entre donc en résonance avec sa vie et son idéal. De son côté, Shimamura, en homme de son temps, estime, par exemple, que sa fille doit choisir par elle-même l'amour et l'homme qui lui conviennent. Il refuse d'émettre le moindre avis à ce sujet, ni même de rencontrer l'éventuel mari. Sur le plan strictement professionnel, Sumako et Shimamura sont, tous deux, des perfectionnistes. L'osmose est donc totale : elle aboutira à une vie de couple et à la fondation d'un Théâtre d'Art moderne.
