Starring Jai, Anjali, Sharvanand and Ananya, it was produced by A R Murugadoss in association with Fox Star Studios, marking the studio's entry into Tamil cinema. Engeyum Eppodhum illustrates two love stories—one set against the backdrop of Chennai and the other in Tiruchi—which join together in the climax. The film released on 16 September 2011, to very positive reviews, going on to become a critical and commercial success. The film was dubbed into Telugu as Journey and released on 16 December 2011.

The film opens with Vinod (Jai) sipping his milkshake and walking in the subway. Then, suddenly a young woman called Subiksha (Andrea Jeremiah) blocks his path and proposes to him and disappears. He takes it as a joke and goes away. But during the following week, he starts to wonder about her and questions himself whether she told the truth. So, he starts to wait in the subway every day. But she doesn't come. But on the other hand, she visits his workplace in and his friend's room, where he stays. But both the times he doesn't make it in time to meet her. Finally when he meets her, she tells him that they have already met at a party where their mutual friend asks her to drop him at his place as he is very drunk. But Vinod doesn't remember this incident. When he replies to her proposal, she rejects him stating that she just messed with him for his behavior on the night she dropped him at home. But he continues to pursue her. Subiksha puts a condition that if he fought with Ashwin Ranjith, a boxing champion, she would return his love. He agrees to fight him not only to win her love but also cause of an incident that happened because of Ashwin which has caused him to stay away from his father. How he trains himself and fights with Ashwin forms the rest of the story.

Bagavathi (Vijay), owns a tea shop cum hotel near Chennai High court. He lives with the aim of bringing up his younger brother Guna (Jai) as a doctor. He befriends a modern girl Anjali (Reemma Sen) while giving a refill to her. She doesn't know that the refill is valuable for Bagavathy and so casually throws it. He admonishes her for that and with the help of a receptionist gets it back. Anjali initially thinks that he is stingy. But later when she sees him helping a lady whose daughter has gone into labour and subsequently beaten up by a policeman, she gains some respect. Soon Bagavathy finds out that Anjali is the daughter of a Judge who is his friend. Guna has a girlfriend Priya with whom he accidentally develops a physical relationship. Guna hides this news from his brother. Guna's love is objected by Priya's father Easwarapandiyan (Ashish Vidyarthi) fearing for the loss of his status and name in society. Soon, in a college function, some goons sent by Easwarapandiyan beat up Guna. Bagavathy finds him and takes him to hospital. He takes the help of his friend Anand(Yugendran Vasudevan Nair) to safeguard his brother from the atrocities of Easwarapandiyan. Bagavathy, to fulfill his brother's wish, tries to convince Priya's father. Easwarapandiyan humilitates him by masking him polish his shoes. Bagavathy does so but despite that Easwarapandiyan says that Guna will die. Guna attempts to marry Priya even without the knowledge of his brother. But Priya's father collapses the marriage and Guna is killed in front of Bagavathy. Anand is also killed after trying to defend Guna.

Thambi Vettothi Sundaram is set in Kaliyikkavila, a town set on the state border. John (Arya) and Regina (Nayantara) marry reluctantly at a church. They have agreed to the marriage just to make their parents happy. When they take their wedding vows Regina utters her lover's name, "Surya". Upon hearing this, Regina's father (Sathyaraj) faints in the church. Regina feels sorry for her father and ends up marrying John. They live in an apartment together, and John comes home every night drunk deliberately to disturb Regina. A kindhearted man, known as "Relangi mavayya" ("Relangi Uncle") by his family, lives in the village of the same name. His middle-class family consists of his wife, mother, niece Seetha and three children: two sons (Peddodu, "the elder" and Chinnodu, "the younger") and a daughter, Chinni. Peddodu is an introvert, who lives life on his own terms and is unsociable. Although Seetha wants to marry him, her love is apparently unrequited. Chinnodu is the opposite of his brother. He falls in love with Geetha, the daughter of Seetha's paternal uncle who is jealous of Chinnodu's father and denigrates his family's economic status. Although the family is close-knit, the brothers do not communicate well with each other.
