Englishkaran (Tamil: இங்கிலிஷ்காரன், meaning English Man) is a 2005 Tamil film. It casts Sathyaraj in the lead role. "English Karan" with the tagline "Tamizh Vazhga" is a film from the hit combo from Sathyaraj and Shakthi Chidambaram whose earlier ventures "Ennama Kannu" and "Maha Nadigan" were hits. Like other Sathyaraj films, Englishkaaran also has humour, glamour, lots of puns and is based on a strong theme paced with whimsy humour. The film opened to positive reviews and was commercially successful at the box office.
Synopsis
The film starts with Tamizharasu (Sathyaraj), a reformist entering a village with the intention to unite a couple and help a young girl Sandhya (Madhumitha) who aspires to be a singer. There, he faces the anger of Sandhya’s father (Kaadhal Dhandapani), who is a strong believer of older ideologies. But, Sandhya hates Tamizharasu and the reason for that is told in a flashback. The flashback starts with Maheshwari (Namitha), wife of Sathyaraj, aspiring to be a sports champion. Sathyaraj motivates and helps her. Due to some family problems, Maheswari commits suicide after making her husband promise to help her sister to become a popular singer. The rest of the film is how he fulfills the promise.Actors

Rasu (Santhanam) and Mokkai ('Ganja' Karuppu) are youngsters sharing a hostel with a diverse group of people including a professor (Madan Bob), a staunch atheist (Rajesh), a poet and other unemployed, struggling men. Rasu, who works in a coffee shop, is in love with Mahishasuramardhini (Madhumita), but she seemingly ignores all his advances. Rasu was even attacked by her brother after hanging around her house for extended periods of time. Mokkai, who is unemployed due to his lack of education, and does whatever job he can find, dreams of marrying his uncle's daughter back in his village. After a particularly bad day where Mokkai is arrested and beaten by female police officers, Rasu's lies of being in a well-paid job are uncovered (to the disgust of Mahishasuramardhini), the two are also kicked out of the hostel by the owner due to the inability to pay rent. On their last night, both vent their frustration at God after heavy drinking. Both are shocked when GOD(Prakashraj) appears in front of them. Mistaking Him for another unemployed fellow, the two head back to their hostel room only to find God waiting for them in it, waving aside this miracle, all three fall asleep. The next morning, God finally manages to convince Rasu and Mokkai of his true identity after appearing in the forms of Vishnu, Jesus and the Buddha.

Suryaprakash (S. J. Suryah) is a business man who wants to become richer than Bill Gates and in the process, he loses out on family and social life. So he tells a scientist (Nasser) to make a clone of him so that he can keep concentrating on business and the clone can take his place at home. A dam in the village of Solaiyur, which is the lifeline of that village is under assessment for structural integrity by the Public Works Department. The dam inspector (Ponvannan) assesses that the dam is still strong 75 years after it was built. Later that evening, he is hacked to death by the corrupt local MP Nagabhushan (Jagapathi Babu), who wants the dam destroyed for his own benefit. The dying dam inspector throws a pen drive containing details about the proposed plan to destroy the dam into an abandoned Shiva temple near the dam and warns the village head Karunakara (K. Viswanath) that the temple has to be opened as soon as possible, after which he passes away. Karunakara and the villagers are of the opinion that the temple can only be opened by the descendant of Raja Lingeswaran (Rajinikanth), who built the dam as well as the Shiva temple. Lakshmi (Anushka Shetty), the granddaughter of Karunakara and a television journalist, goes on a search to find the Raja's descendant. She soon manages to find the descendant, whose name is Lingeswaran aka Lingaa (Rajinikanth). Lingaa is the grandson of Raja Lingeswaran, but is a petty thief with his family having now fallen on hard times. He holds a grudge against his grandfather, feeling that he had brought down his family into poverty by squandering all his wealth and hence refuses to go with Lakshmi to Solaiyur. However, Lakshmi implicates Lingaa in a robbery, as a result of which the police pursue Lingaa. Lingaa is forced to accept Lakshmi's invitation to avoid getting caught and travels with her to Solaiyur.
