Malenka, the Vampire's Niece (also referred to as Malenka, Malenka: La Nipote del Vampiro, Malenka: la Sobrina del Vampiro, The Vampire Girl, and Fangs of the Living Dead) is a 1969 Spanish-Italian horror film that was written and directed by Spanish director Amando de Ossorio, and his first horror film. The movie had its world premiere on July 23, 1969 in Italy and was released in Spain in August of the same year. The film was inspired by similarly themed Italian and British vampire films that were releasing during the same time period such as Dance of the Vampires, and is one of the first vampire films to originate in Spain. It has been credited as being "the 1969 picture that hammered the final nail into the cinematic coffin of the bomb-shelter-era bombshell Anita Ekberg", as well as being "one of the most original gothic examples of Spanish horror". Boris Karloff was initially approached to star in the film, but he eventually turned down the role following contractual wrangles. (Boris wound up dying before the film was completed anyway.) There are two alternative endings for the film, a rationale-type ending in which the vampire turns out to be a hoax, and a supernatural ending which was added only to the English version of the film. The musical score by Carlo Savina was later reused in the 1971 low-budget horror La notte dei dannati. Julian Ugarte played the vampire uncle, fresh from his appearance as the vampire in Paul Naschy's classic La Marca del Hombre Lobo (1968).

Upon its release producers offered "free psychiatric care" for anyone disturbed by Malenka or by two of the other films they were showing, Curse of the Living Dead or Revenge of the Living Dead.

Synopsis

The beautiful and virginal Sylvia (Anita Ekberg) is delighted to discover that she's inherited not only the noble title of Countess, but she has also inherited a castle located in the country. She excitedly calls her fiance Piero (Gianni Medici) to tell him that she's going to travel to view the castle. Once there she stops at a local inn for a drink, where she announces her destination and relation to the castle's inhabitants- which horrifies the townspeople. Unswayed by the townspeople's reactions, Sylvia arrives at the castle and meets her uncle, the Count Walbrooke (Julian Ugarte), and beds down for the night. She is later awakened by the maidservant Blinka (Adriana Ambesi), who warns her that Walbrooke is a century-old vampire that means her harm. Blinka's attempts to draw Sylvia out of bed and out of the castle are interrupted by Walbrooke, who takes her into another room and whips her. Sylvia pleads with him to stop, only for Walbrooke to reveal that Blinka herself is also a vampire.

A drunken Gypsy couple spending the night in the abandoned Wolfstein castle accidentally resurrect the werewolf Imre Wolfstein when they remove the silver cross from his corpse. Once alive, he not only kills the Gypsy couple, but also wreaks havoc on a nearby village. The villagers attribute the attack to ordinary wolves, and in response, form a hunting party to kill off the animals. While on the hunt, Count Waldemar Daninsky is attacked by Imre Wolfstein and is afflicted with lycanthropy. After killing innocent victims in the midst of his transformation, he seeks help from specialists, Dr. Janos de Mikhelov and his wife, who turn out to be two vampires, who then prey on both Janice and Rudolph, Waldemar's friends. The vampires revive the first werewolf, Imre, from the dead, and force the two werewolves to battle each other. Waldemar kills Imre Wolfstein with his fangs and then destroys the two vampires, only to be killed in turn by a bullet fired by Janice, the woman who loved him most.

Mexican funnyman, El Clavillazo (Antonio Espino), is in love with a seamstress named Beatriz (Evangelina Elizondo), and also hangs out with a variety of odd characters, including a newsboy and a mental patient. Meanwhile, at the nearby castle, a mad scientist named “Dr Sputnik” and his scarred, hunchbacked assistant are busy making monsters. The doctor poses as a kindly blind man in town and uses hypnosis to lure Beatriz to his castle, brainwashing her into believing that she is his own love named “Galatea”. El Clavillazo, with an assist from his friends, blunders his way into the castle, where he spends most of his time being chased around by various monsters. There is the butler, who looks like the Frankenstein Monster. The rest of the monsters include a werewolf, a mummy, a vampire (clearly modeled after Count Dracula) and a gill-man (clearly patterned after "Creature from the Black Lagoon"). There is also another, unidentified monster being kept in a cell (why it is not allowed to run free with the rest is not known), which is referred to as a “gorilla” in some reviews, although it appears to be more of a humanoid ape-like creature, perhaps based on Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. In the end, El Clavillazo manages to defeat the monsters, mostly by luck, and rescue the girl. A chemical in Sputnik’s lab devolves the gill-man into a big fish, the werewolf is choked out by the monster in the cell (perhaps that is why he was kept behind bars), Frankenstein accidentally electrocutes himself by grabbing a power cable in the lab and turns into cogs and clock-parts, the mummy falls into a pit of alligators and is devoured, and the vampire vanishes when the sun rises. Dr Sputnik has the usual falling out that all mad scientists seem to eventually have with their deformed assistants (usually due to the scientist mistreating his assistant, or the assistant developing a crush on a girl the scientist has designs on, or sometimes a combination of both), resulting in his being shot after he stabs the scarred hunchback. Clavillazo and Beatriz are trapped in a room and about to be crushed by the walls moving together when they are rescued in the nick of time by the rest of the gang, and they all live happily ever after.

Jacob (Doug Bradley) is an antiques dealer who sets off with his new young and pregnant wife Lauren (Grace Vallorani) and his stepdaughter, Rachel (Rita Ramnani) to a forest homestead in a hopeful effort to heal bonds between feuding family members. He also carries a large, mysterious and ancient Babylonian mirror, smuggled out of the middle east, which he plans to sell for profit. Lilith (Natalie Celino), a sultry ornithologist appeares out of a bird hide by a noisy pair of friends hiking through the woods. Gaining their confidence, she and one of the men, Travis (Scott North) go into the woods for a quick tryst, but immediately there is a blood curdling scream. The other camper, Stanley (James Fisher), rushes toward the sound and finds his friend mutilated and near dead. Near Travis, Lilith explains to Stanley that the shadows had come to life and attacked them, and the two set off to seek help. When they end up at Jacob's cabin, the entire group comes under attack by supernatural forces of darkness. Rachel discovers Irish cowboy Phelan (Jonnie Hurn) hanging out in their barn. Phelan is a vampire and himself a former vampire hunter. He tells Rachel that the real danger to everyone is Lilith, and explains how Lilith had been Adam's willful first wife who, since having been exiled from the Garden of Eden, had been spawning demonic offspring in the world of man. Considered the mother to the Succubi, ruler of shadows, slaughterer of children, and consort to the devil himself, she had been re-awakened by, and drawn to the location of, the occult power inherent in the mirror carried by Jacob. Phelan has been harboring a centuries-long grudge against her for she having "turned" him 120 years earlier, and he had been tracking her for decades, equipped with the one relic that might finally kill her... a bone splinter from the rib of Adam himself.
