Would-be politician Sir Hugo Boycott (Mander) and his wife Madeleine (Carroll) have an unhappy marriage. Madeleine is aware that Hugo is a serial philanderer, and their problems are exacerbated when she fails to produce the heir he wants. After a particularly serious quarrel, Hugo storms off to North Africa and one of his mistresses. In his absence, Madeleine drifts around in London society where she is courted by Lord David Harbrough (John Loder). She rebuffs his advances, but finds him sympathetic as an individual and agrees that they should remain friends.

Seeking background material for a mystery he is working on, novelist Charles Condomine (Harrison) invites eccentric medium Madame Arcati (Rutherford) to his home in Lympne, Kent, to conduct a séance. As Charles, his wife Ruth (Cummings), and their guests the Bradmans barely restrain themselves from laughing, Madame Arcati performs peculiar rituals and finally goes into a trance. Dans un Londres dévasté par les bombardements de l'après-guerre, une vieille dame, Mrs. Erlynne, assiste à la mise aux enchères d'un éventail lui ayant appartenu. À l'aide de quatre flash-back, le film reconstitue le passé des époux Windermere, de Lord Darlington, de Lord Lorton et de Mrs. Erlynne et de leurs relations complexes. Au cours de son entretien avec Lord Darlington, Mrs. Erlynne lui révèle qu'elle est la mère de Lady Margaret Windermere. Elle avait sauvé sa fille d'une situation embarrassante au cours de laquelle celle-ci risquait d'être compromise. En signe de gratitude, Lady Windermere lui légua son éventail. Extrêmement bouleversé par ce qu'il apprend, Darlington invite Mrs. Erlynne à dîner.
