Gordon Harker (7 August 1885 – 2 March 1967) was an English stage and film actor. He appeared in 68 films between 1921 and 1959, including three films directed by Alfred Hitchcock and in several scenes in Elstree Calling (1930), a revue film co-directed by Hitchcock. He was noted for his performance as Inspector Hornleigh in a trilogy of films produced between 1938 and 1940, as well in the Saloon Bar, based on stage play he had starred in and Things Happen at Night, a poltergeist comedy he co-starred in with Alfred Drayton and Robertson Hare.

On the morning of the Epsom Derby, a disparate group of people prepare to go to the races. Happily she falls and injures her leg, and her crafty housekeeper arranges for one of the young maids to go in her place. Meanwhile, in Battersea, a lodger kills a man whose wife he is having an affair with. They plan to flee the country, and also head to Epsom where he knows a tipster who can smuggle them out.

Charlie Hopkins (Gordon Harker) is a retired burglar with an expertise in safecracking. His ex-partner The Duke (Bernard Lee) holds a grudge against Charlie, since he believes he ratted him out and sent him to jail. The Duke is out for revenge against Charlie, and hires Bill Hopkins (Cyril Cusack), Charlie's son, to help him perform a hit, with an intention to frame the kid. The Duke's plan doesn't work out, since Bill turns out to be an even better safecracker than his old man.
