Synopsis
Amélie, a young Belgian woman (played by Sylvie Testud), having spent her childhood in Japan, decides to return to live there and tries to integrate into Japanese society. She is determined to be a "real Japanese" before her year contract runs out, though it is precisely this determination that is incompatible with Japanese humility. Though she is hired for a choice position as a translator at an import/export firm, her inability to understand Japanese cultural norms results in increasingly humiliating demotions. Though Amelie secretly adulates her immediate supervisor, Ms Mori (Kaori Tsuji), the latter takes sadistic pleasure in belittling Amelie. Mori finally manages to break Amelie's will by making her the bathroom attendant, and is delighted when Amelie tells her that she will not renew her contract. Amelie realizes that she is finally a real Japanese when she enters the company president's office "with fear and trembling," which was possible only because her determination had been broken by Mori's systematic humiliation.Actors

Isabelle (Sagnier) is a young, ambitious and talented executive working in the Paris office of an unnamed multi-national corporation. Her immediate boss is Christine (Scott Thomas), equally ambitious, who presents Isabelle's work as her own to win a promotion to the firm's New York office. Tired of being upstaged, and with the aid of a colleague, Daniel (Marquet), Isabelle blindsides Christine with a secret project that the New York office enthusiastically endorses. Christine's New York promotion is subsequently withdrawn. Enraged by what she considers an act of disloyalty, Christine begins to psychologically torment Isabelle. Christine's lover, Philippe (Mille), works with the firm and is suspected of embezzling funds. Using this information against him, she blackmails Philippe into standing up Isabelle, with whom he is having an affair, leaving her inconsolable. Isabelle is then humiliated at a staff party in which security camera footage of her meltdown is presented to her colleagues.

Henri Savin has managed a trucking company for his lover, Dominique Montlaur, for many years. Now he is planning to leave her for Julie Manet, the woman he has made pregnant, and Dominique is hysterical. She first threatens suicide, then shows up at a meeting of Savin and Julie. Dominique tries everything she can think of to break Savin and Julie apart, to no avail. Frustrated in her efforts, she jumps off a cliff and dies. Savin insists that he and Julie lie to the police about the encounter, although Dominique's death was a suicide and therefore they had no direct hand in it. Clara, (Sylvie Testud), works in a birdshop. She is concerned about her deaf-mute daughter Anna, (Camille Gauthier), whom she is bringing up on her own. She has never spoken a single word. Clara herself is illiterate. Ever since her grandmother Baba, whom she adored, had been the victim of an attack when she was reading her a story, she has always refused to learn to read and write. Now that the silence of her daughter Anna is causing her to be bullied by her peers, Clara feels obliged to withdraw her from her school, and to enrol her in a school for the deaf-mute, run by Vincent, (Sergi López). Vincent, the principal, suggests giving his new pupil particular classes to teach her Sign Language, and so facilitate Anna's integration.

Onimata Kan (Tarō Suwa) is a middle-aged writer of BDSM literature fame and he hosts in a Tokyo Bay houseboat named the "Slave Ship" swinger-style BDSM parties attended by couples. Christine Papin (Sylvie Testud), and Léa Papin (Julie-Marie Parmentier) are sisters with a troubled past, who work as maids in Le Mans, France.
