In 2006, Flesh and the Devil was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant".
Synopsis
The film is a romantic melodrama about two childhood friends who grow up to be soldiers in Germany. One of the friends, Leo (Gilbert), becomes infatuated with Felicitas (Garbo), the wife of a powerful count (a marriage about which Felicitas neglects to inform Leo). The count calls for a duel of honor with Leo, but insists that it be done under the false pretense that the quarrel was due to angry words exchanged between the two at a card game in order to protect the count's reputation. Leo kills the count in the duel, but then is punished by the military, being sent away to Africa for five years.Actors

Yvonne Valbret (Garbo) is a Parisian kept woman who poses as an artist's model. She falls in love with a young student of foreign diplomacy, André Montell, played by Robert Montgomery. When André learns of her past and her multiple lovers, he leaves her. But finding Yvonne living in poverty when their paths cross again, he pays for her to live in his country cottage outside Paris and they engage in a Platonic relationship. He soon reveals his intent to marry another woman as Yvonne begs him not to desert her. André eventually realizes he loves Yvonne and decides to choose love over career. When he comes to the cottage to tell her, he is met by one of Yvonne's old lovers pleading with her to return to him. Dan Malloy est un hors-la-loi qui n'arrive pas à rentrer dans le droit chemin, malgré son amour pour une jeune femme qu'il vient de rencontrer juste après sa dernière attaque de train. Le shérif, lui-même amoureux de la belle, met au point un piège dans lequel se retrouve pris Dan. Condamné à dix ans de prison, Dan s'ennuie et utilise ses dons en dessin pour tracer un portrait du Christ sur le mur de sa cellule. Le lendemain, un meurtrier qui est conduit à la potence passe devant le dessin et reçoit miraculeusement une vision du Christ. Dan, en voyant ce miracle, se sent un instrument dans les mains de Dieu. Il commence à lire la Bible. Des artistes en visite pour voir ce portrait admirent la qualité de son travail. Une demande de pardon arrive finalement sur le bureau du gouverneur et peu après l'ancien bandit est libre de sortir. Alors qu'il veut se venger du shérif qui l'a fait emprisonner, une tempête éclate et un éclair frappe le shérif. Dan retrouve la femme qui l'aime, enfin digne de cet amour.
