Henry Stephenson (16 April 1871 – 24 April 1956) was a British stage and film actor. He portrayed friendly and wise gentlemen in many films of the 1930s and 1940s. Among his roles were Sir Joseph Banks in Mutiny on the Bounty (1935) and Mr. Brownlow in Oliver Twist (1948).

Biography
Élevé en Angleterre, il débute aux États-Unis en 1901, au théâtre à Broadway, où il joue régulièrement jusqu'en 1932. Il figure dans quelques films muets, à partir de 1917, mais sa carrière au cinéma démarre véritablement en 1932, avec au total 90 films tournés pour la RKO Pictures, la Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer et la Warner Bros. Pictures, aux côtés notamment de Jean Harlow ou d'Errol Flynn. Après un dernier film en 1949, il jouera encore une fois à Broadway en 1949-1950 et fera quelques apparitions à la télévision, dans des séries, en 1951.Son épouse était l'actrice américaine Ann Shoemaker (1891-1978).

A young woman in labour makes her way to a parish workhouse and dies after giving birth to a boy, who is systematically named Oliver Twist (John Howard Davies) by the workhouse authorities. As the years go by, Oliver and the rest of the child inmates suffer from the callous indifference of the officials in charge: beadle Mr. Bumble (Francis L. Sullivan) and matron Mrs. Corney (Mary Clare). At the age of nine, the hungry children draw straws; Oliver loses and has to ask for a second helping of gruel ("Please sir, I want some more").
