Synopsis
In 1929 in Abruzzo, in the mountain villages of Pescina and Fontamara, near Avezzano, the people are subjugated by the arrival of a team of fascists. The militiamen prove hostile, preventing citizens from obtaining supplies necessary to survive the imminent winter. The small Berardo is shocked by the rape of his mother by a fascist officer, and is forced to go to Rome, meditating revenge. Ten years later Berardo in fact, now that he has become large, goes back from Rome in Abruzzo, and discovers that the country is still victim of abuse of fascism. The young communist tries to attack squadrons, but is murdered.Actors

En octobre 1943, le commandement allemand de la place de Rome ordonne que la communauté juive de la ville lui livre, dans un délai de vingt-quatre heures, cinquante kilos d'or : faute de quoi deux cents otages seront fusillés. La collecte des bijoux s'effectue, sans éviter de provoquer des remous dans la communauté juive. Bien qu'à la fin, la rançon soit effectivement livrée, l'autorité militaire ne tient nullement ses promesses. Une rafle est organisée autour du Portico d'Ottavia, dans laquelle deux mille juifs seront capturés et dirigés vers les camps d'extermination nazis. Le film conte, en parallèle, une intrigue amoureuse entre Giulia, fille d'un professeur juif, et Massimo, étudiant de confession catholique. Giulia n'ignore pas qu'un mariage pourrait lui éviter la déportation et lui sauver la vie.

Thirteen-year-old Edmund Kohler lives in devastated, post-World War II Berlin with his ailing, bedridden father and his adult siblings, Eva and Karl-Heinz. Eva manages to obtain cigarettes by going out with soldiers of the Allied forces, but she resists her friends' advice to prostitute herself. Karl-Heinz is the older son who fought in the war and is a burden to the struggling family, refusing to register with the police and get a ration card because he is afraid of what would happen if they found out he fought to the bitter end. The Kohlers and others have been assigned to the apartment home of the Rademachers by the housing authority, much to Mr. Rademacher's irritation.
