For the Love of Dolly is a 2006 documentary film directed by Tai Uhlmann. It focuses on five colorful Dolly Parton fans and explores their fascination with the singer. The film made its debut at the 2006 Miami Film Festival.

Synopsis

This documentary was filmed over the course of a year [1] and shows five of Dolly's most avid fans as they follow her career. Dolly Parton's upbeat attitude, sense of humor and great talent allow her to inspire fans across the country. The film is made up of interviews, footage of daily life, trips to Dolly concerts and pilgrimages to Dollywood, the Dolly Parton theme park. The film documents the ways that Dolly's fans exhibit not only their adoration for Dolly, but also their need to be close to her, literally following her career as they travel to as many venues where she makes appearances as possible. For the Love of Dolly shows that fandom can give meaning to some people's lives, but it can also overwhelm the lives of others.

The film begins with discussion amidst Hole's 1994 and 1995 world tour, then works backwards to Schemel's childhood growing up in Marysville, Washington, and details her coming out to her family as a lesbian, as well as her immersion in Seattle's music scenes, where she would eventually cross paths with Kurt Cobain. Through contemporary interviews with Schemel's bandmates Courtney Love, Eric Erlandson, and Melissa Auf der Maur, her beginnings in Hole are detailed, including her audition with Love and Erlandson in Los Angeles amidst the Rodney King riots, as well as her time living with Love and husband Kurt Cobain, and the songwriting process between Love, Schemel, and Erlandson. Additional commentary from fellow female drummers, musicians, peers, and friends of Schemel's are provided throughout. After the death of Hole's bassist Kristen Pfaff in 1994 (only two months after the suicide of Kurt Cobain), the band embarked on a world tour with Auf der Maur as Pfaff's replacement, and Schemel, along with Love, began heavily using heroin. Schemel's drug use leads to a breakup with her girlfriend, who acted as Love's personal assistant on the tour, and Schemel reflects on her time in a rehabilitation facility she checked into with Love after the conclusion of the tour in 1995.

On pourra légitimement s'étonner de la parution d'un live du Boss, si peu de temps après son (magnifique) DVD de "réunion" à New-York. D'autant que les anciens fans s'en rappelleront : il a fallu lui tirer les vers du nez, à Bruce, pour qu'il daigne sortir son premier live en 1986 ! La surprise est d'autant plus grande que la setlist, à première vue, a quand même certains points communs avec le live de 2001. D'où vient alors la différence? Elle vient naturellement de "The rising", ce fameux nouvel album enregistré avec tout le E Street Band, le premier depuis 1987. Ce genre de réunion à l'arrachée de vieux line-ups, en général, ce n'est pas toujours pour le meilleur ; mais ici c'est du Boss qu'on parle. Et l'homme sait depuis belle lurette comment bien faire les choses.
