Synopsis
Les jeunes frères Gray s'installent à la campagne est découvrent la vie dont l'amour pour la jeune fille du fermier voisin, Willadean Wills. In 1945, as a truckload of war survivors stops in front of an Amsterdam factory at the end of World War II, Otto Frank (Joseph Schildkraut) gets out and walks inside. After climbing the stairs to a deserted garret, Otto finds a girl's discarded glove and sobs, then is joined and comforted by Miep Gies (Dodie Heath) and Mr. Kraler (Douglas Spencer), factory workers who shielded him from the Nazis. After stating that he is now all alone, Otto begins to search for the diary written by his youngest daughter, Anne. Miep promptly retrieves the journal for Otto, and he receives solace reading the words written by his young daughter three years earlier.

The film begins as if it were a stage play presented by Mother Goose (and her wise-cracking, talking goose companion, Sylvester) about two nursery rhyme characters, Mary, Mary Quite Contrary and Tom the Piper's Son, who are about to be married. At the same time, the miserly and villainous Barnaby is hiring two crooks, Gonzorgo and Rodrigo, to throw Tom into the sea and steal Mary's sheep, thus depriving her of her means of support, and forcing her to marry Barnaby instead. (Mary has just come into a huge inheritance of which she is obviously unaware, but somehow–it is never explained how–Barnaby knows about it and intends to get it for himself.) After bopping Tom on the head with a hammer and tying him in a bag, the two henchmen, dimwitted Gonzorgo and silent Roderigo, pass by a gypsy camp. They decide to sell Tom to the Gypsies instead of drowning him in order to collect a double payment.

Pendant son voyage vers Berlin, le jeune Émile Tischbein se fait voler les 400 Deutsche marks qu'il devait apporter à sa grand-mère de la poche de sa veste. La famille Calloway vit dans la forêt juste en dehors de la petite ville de Swiftwater en Nouvelle-Écosse. Le père Cam rêve de construire un sanctuaire pour les oies sauvages qui migrent. Mais la population de la ville trouve Cam trop excentrique. Cam et son fils Bucky décident d'amasser des fourrures pour récolter assez d'argent pour acheter un lac. Mais la somme récoltée ne suffit pas et ils sont contraints de vendre leur maison. La famille construit une nouvelle maison au bord du lac mais un promoteur envisage de construire une zone de loisirs dans la petite ville. Il propose à Cam en échange d'argent et de promesses d'aider à construire le sanctuaire de planter un champ de maïs pour attirer les oiseaux. Cam apprend par la suite que le but du promoteur est de faire un plan d'eau pour la chasse aux oies.

The story opens with the children's grandfather, D.J. Mulrooney (Walter Brennan), a well-known executive officer of a vast timber-trading company. D.J. is an eccentric and passionate man with a distinctive snore, as well as vast dedication and determination. D.J. is going to Seattle to sell 50,000 acres of timberland. D.J. takes his personal, customized 1930 Rolls-Royce Phantom II on the trip. In a brief conversation with his Company Head of Security, Ralph Yarby (Richard Deacon), we learn that the car was purchased after D.J. earned his first US$1 million. His first stop is The Airport where he picks up his grandchildren Elizabeth (Karen Dotrice) and Rodney (Matthew Garber) who are to accompany D.J. on his trip to Seattle. The children ask about the Rolls, to them an unusual car, and D.J. compares the Rolls with his first car back in Ireland, a one horsepower "Jaunty Car".

1930's France. Henri Charrière (Steve McQueen), a safecracker nicknamed Papillon because of the butterfly tattoo on his chest, is wrongly convicted of murdering a pimp, he is being framed for the crime. As he and Glimpy Freedhoff (Huntz Hall) anxiously anticipate their furlough home, Muggs McGinnis (Leo Gorcey) is summoned to the colonel (Bryant Washburn)'s office and informed that he is to be honorably discharged because of poor eyesight. At home in the Bowery, Muggs is tearfully telling his proud mother (Mary Gordon) about his discharge when Glimpy bursts into the apartment with the news that Danny (Dave Durand) has been jailed.
