Idhayathai Thirudathe is a 1989 Tamil, romance film written and directed by Mani Ratnam. The soundtrack is composed by Ilaiyaraaja. Upon release, the film met with both commercial success and critical acclaim. The film released in 1989 along with a dubbed version in Telugu language titled Geethanjali (1989 film). The film was later dubbed in Malayalam. The film was remade in Hindi as Yaad Rakhegi Duniya starring Aditya Pancholi, Rukhsar and Vikram Gokhale. The film won the National Film Award for Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment and seven Andhra Pradesh state Nandi Awards.

Synopsis

Prakash (Akkineni Nagarjuna), a carefree, mischievous student graduates from College. During his celebration with his friends, he gets into a road accident. Although the accident is only minor, during medical tests, he is diagnosed with terminal cancer and has few months left. Unable to hear his mother's constant crying, he packs his bags and leaves to his family's vacation home in Ooty for a few weeks.

The beginning of the film is set in 1951 in a small village of Idar in Sabarkantha district, northern Gujarat, a young man named Gurukant "Guru" Desai (Abhishek Bachchan) dreams of making it big some day. Pagal Nilavu is in essence the story of Selvam(Murali) an aimless youth in Muttam(Kanyakumari Dist) who out of a sense of deep gratitude ends up joining the gang of Devaraj aka Periyavar(Sathyaraj) and the complications which arise when he falls in love with Jyothi(Revathi), the sister of Robert Manohar(Sarat Babu) an honest and committed police inspector who is newly posted to the town. Periyavar pretty much runs the town and though he helps people in need, he is a diabolical kingpin who will not compromise on his hold of the town for anything. He wins Selvam’s undying loyalty when he helps him with money and power at a critical juncture to save his mother. In this backdrop Robert takes charge and moves into the town with his sister and daughter. Being uncompromising in his morals, Robert is automatically drawn into a game of oneupmanship with Periyavar and his gang. He also consequentially cannot stand Periyavar’s chief henchman Selvam, and is consequentially drawn into continuous verbal and physical duels with him. Selvam meanwhile falls hook line and sinker to Jyothi(Revathi) and tries every trick in the book to woo her and eventually wins.

The story revolves around five people. Kamal Haasan, a city bred is married to Sumithra, a village girl. On the other hand Vijayakumar, a village lad and Phataphat Jayalakshmi, a modern woman are married. Jayalakshmi hates living with her husband (Vijayakumar) and eyes Kamal Haasan. Meanwhile Sripriya, a young girl wants at least to have a child with Kamal Haasan, attracted by him even if he doesn't marry her. As the title suggests, the film ends with Kamal Haasan overcoming all these issues and ends living with Sumithra.
