Synopsis

Apparu pour la première fois à Ann Arbor (Michigan) en pleine révolution contre-culturelle, le style de rock'n'roll puissant et agressif des Stooges a fait l’effet d’une bombe dans le paysage musical de la fin des années 60. Soufflant le public avec un mélange de rock, de blues, de R&B et de free jazz, le groupe - au sein duquel débute Iggy Pop - posa les fondations de ce que l’on appellera plus tard le punk et le rock alternatif. GIMME DANGER retrace l’épopée des Stooges et présente le contexte dans lequel l'un des plus grands groupes de rock de tous les temps a émergé musicalement, culturellement, politiquement et historiquement. Jim Jarmusch retrace leurs aventures et leurs mésaventures en montrant leurs inspirations et les motivations de leurs premiers défis commerciaux, jusqu’à leur arrivée au Panthéon du rock.

William Blake, an accountant from Cleveland, Ohio, rides by train to the frontier company town of Machine to assume a promised job as an accountant in the town's metal works. Arriving in town, Blake discovers that his position has already been filled, and he is driven from the workplace at gunpoint by John Dickinson, the ferocious owner of the company. Jobless and without money or prospects, Blake meets Thel Russell, a former prostitute who sells paper flowers. He lets her take him home. Thel's ex-boyfriend Charlie surprises them in bed and shoots at Blake, accidentally killing Thel when she tries to shield Blake with her body. A wounded Blake shoots and kills Charlie with Thel's gun before climbing dazedly out the window and fleeing Machine on a stolen horse. Company-owner Dickinson just happens to be Charlie's father, and he hires three legendary frontier killers, Cole Wilson, Conway Twill, and Johnny "The Kid" Pickett to bring Blake back 'dead or alive'.

Le paradoxe d'un musicien, point prophète en son pays, et qui, sans le savoir, devient une idole dans une autre contrée. Le film suit l'enquête de deux fans du Cap sur la disparition supposée du chanteur. Toutefois, « loin de dissiper ce mystère, le film l'alimente plutôt ».
